Going Green Safely

Love this tank! I owned a large aquarium many years ago and must say this is the easiest setup and best self-contained nano I've seen. Very quiet when compared to some of the large aquariums, and once the main lights and fans go off for the evening you can hardly hear it running. I'm using a 50W heater and the temps hold perfectly.......I'm sure the LED's are the reason why. After receiving the tank, I suggest filling and testing for leaks, and to check the pumps, before setting up in the house. During testing I could hear both pumps running but noticed water coming out of only one outlet. Turns out the other outlet still had a plastic plug in it that the manufacturer had not removed. With the tap of a screwdriver it popped right out. Best feature: Lid has a support legs on each side so no need to remove the whole lid when working on the tank. For now, it's running smoothly with just the prefilter, purigen and chemi-pure (sometimes I use charcoal and purigen). One tip: if you have a lot of micro-bubbles in the tank, make sure the water level is high enough and that the black filter in each pump chamber is up against the side wall (next to center chamber). I also keep the top edge of the filter about 1/2" above the chamber. When putting the stand together, go more by the pics in the instructions than by how each piece is labeled. I found some of the pieces to my stand were mislabeled. For a tank AND stand, BEST price on the internet! August 29, 2012

Excellent Tank I bought this tank about 4 months ago and it's amazing. The 28 gallon nanocube is the perfect size for a bedroom aquarium (it's extremely quiet, mine is about 6 feet from my bed) and the intermediate LEDs are amazingly bright! The LEDs do not contribute heat to the tank whatsoever. DrFosterSmith was the best place to buy this tank from, they are extremely helpful and great with customer service. Overall I highly recommend this tank to anyone looking for an easy to maintain saltwater aquarium! August 19, 2012

Great first step into reef keeping I love this aquarium. When I first set it up the Acella stock pumps were a bit noisy, but it was because I did not have my water level topped up high enough. As well, the intakes in the rear of the tank were hitting against the side of the tank. You just have to mess with them a bit. And after a day, it runs more quietly than the Bio-Wheel HOB filters on my freshwater tank. The lighting is fantastic--both the daytime LED's, and the nighttime moon LEDs. The rounded glass has very little distortion. I also like the duo wavemaker, which adds nice alternating water flow. I am planning to add a couple of Hydor Koralia power heads as I want to eventually keep LPS and softies. I've been told you don't HAVE to have the extra flow, but it seems like there are some fairly mellow flow spots as I am cycling my tank with live rock right now. This nano has five chambers in the back, two chambers on the outsides for the pumps, two middle chambers, and the center intake chamber. The center chamber has a removable, well-built acrylic filter basket that is a nice feature, which includes three compartments for filter media - I've removed the bio balls as I've heard they can really be a nitrate factory, and instead have opted to keep the filter pad and charcoal. I'm still fiddling with the center unit, which I will eventually use as a refugium, with a small submersible LED light from In-Tank, running chaeto macroalgae, purigen, and chemi-pure elite. I'm using the two other chambers to run my heaters right now (main heater, plus a backup if the main malfunctions). The quality is actually higher than what I expected for the price. A great way to take the plunge into the saltwater side of the hobby. June 14, 2012

Caveat Emptor - buyer beware The price and features are compelling for a novice saltwater aquarist. While the stand was a bit challenging to construct, it well serves its purpose. The aquarium is beautiful to view; however, the two powerheads (contained in the rear chambers) are loud when starting up (via the excellent Wavemaker device). I made several attemps to re-seat the powerheads with no success. The lighting is excellent and the aquarium was an easy setup. After six weeks, I noticed water accumulating around the base of the aquarium. Initially, I thought it was 'splash over' when I opened the lid to service the tank. In short order I found the right rear chamber leaking. It appears the silicone was not tight or properly sealed and water is buldging through the black tape that encircles the rear chambers. I researched on line and found forum postings from a few others who experienced similar issues with this particular product. I called the manufacturer #JBJ#. That company is honoring the warranty #glad I sent in the registration#; however, I hoped they would overnight a replacement. It appears I will receive in four days. Additionally, I am required to ship back the damaged unit and they provided shipping labels. The manufacturer representatives are not very customer-focused #failing to follow up, return calls or reply to email messages#. I did not involve representatives from Drs. Foster and Smith, as #in my opinion# are not responsible for the manufactuer's defect. I still recommend the product, yet buyers should be aware of these issues. October 22, 2012

How do you run a power cord from inside the main tank to outside of it?

If you want to add a piece of equipment inside of the tank - how do you run the power cord from inside of the tank to outside of the tank? There doesn’t appear to be an opening to run a power cord through? Thanks.
