Directions for use
Installation - Set the Impeller on the Impeller Holder and fit the Suction Jet and Housing together.

Inserting the Batteries
Remove the battery Compartment Cover by applying pressure on the Locking Button. Insert the batteries in accordance with the polarity markings (+/-). Please make sure the batteries are fitted correctly. If not, the impeller will run in the reverse direction with very limited power. Make sure that no moisture gets into the battery compartment. Also make sure the sealing ring fits properly when you close the unit. To ensure secure closure, make sure the Locking Button makes an audible "click."

NOTE: The alkaline batteries supplied with the Sludge Extractor last for an operating life of approximately 4 hours. If rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries are used, the operating life will be approximately 2 hours.

Cleaning your Aquarium Gravel
After the Suction Jet (and, if required, also the Extension Jet) is connected to the Pump Chamber, the Sludge Extractor is ready for use. To clean aquarium gravel, use the Suction Jet to loosen the gravel layer. The sludge in the gravel bed is churned and drawn into the suction stream of the pump.

The waterproof Button can be used to conveniently switch the Sludge Extractor ON and OFF. When switched OFF, any gravel, which has been sucked up will fall back to the bottom. Continue to clean an area until the water in the Suction Jet is clear. When using the Sludge Extractor, small dirt particles may cause aquarium water to become slightly cloudy. However, the main aquarium filter quickly removes this.

Cleaning the Filter Element
Press the two locking buttons on the sides and pull out the Filter Element. Remove one or both covers from the Filter Element and thoroughly clean filter by placing it under running water. After cleaning the filter, replace the cover. Place the bottom of the Filter Element into the Sludge Extractor Housing and snap into place.

After using the Sludge Extractor in a marine aquarium, thoroughly clean the unit in clean fresh water. To clean the Sludge Extractor, remove the Suction Jet, Filter Element, and the impeller, and then rinse the Sludge Extractor thoroughly under running water.

NOTE: Keep the battery compartment closed. Make sure the Sludge Extractor is operated in water so the impeller does not run dry.

Quick Vac Pro 2-1/2" x 24" high 3.9 5 9 9

Quick Vac I bought this Vac almost 5 yrs ago loved the easy of using in my 4- 20 gal tanks. It was easy to clean up after each tank usage the only problem I had was the batteries did not last as long as I would like it to run. This is my second unit first one got broken due to gradkids playing war games with other fiends. November 29, 2012

Work's Great! This thing work's pretty good.It could use a little more power,but other then that work's fine.Very quiet,the only way you know it's working is watching the waste go into the poo-vac.I just got it and really like it for in between cleaning's.I would really recommend getting one! Cleaning gravel has never been easier! I have a 46 gallon bowfront freshwater tank. Previously I was trying to clean the gravel with the siphon tube during each weekly water change. Even though I only cleaned 1/3 of the gravel per week and moved to a different "zone" the next time, I never felt I had enough time to do a thorough job. After much research online and reading lots of reviews, blogs, forums etc. about this product, I decided to give it a try. It's very well designed and does exactly what the description says. The amount of debris that is caught in the filter is amazing--much more than appeared using the siphon tube. And there's no rush! March 28, 2011

This product is a dream come true. It is easy to use and very durable. I have two established tropical tanks. I used to do the gravel cleaning with the manual vacuum and hose. Now I just do a water change and vacuum my tank floors. The amount of muck that you get out is amazing. I love this thing January 21, 2011

I wouldn't recommend it. It works but even the tiniest bit of sand will clog it. Like everyone with sand substrate knows you supposed to vacuum an inch or two above the substrate but even if a couple of pieces get sucked up it will clog up. you can unclog it easily and get back to vacuuming but unclogging it every 30 seconds isn't very effective in my opinion and no telling how long it will take to eventually cause permanent damage to the vacuum

I use it on sand, what you do is insert a piece of hose onto the end of it, you'll see when you look there's a place to add it. For mine since I did not have the right size hose to go over it, it went inside it nice and snug and it's just like using a hose to vacuum.

It's very similar to using a common siphon to stir up the gravel and remove particulate matter. The only difference is that this doesn't remove the detrius along with the water, this just runs the water through a filter so that the detrius is trapped and the water goes right back into the tank. In addition, this is powered instead of relying on gravity.

So to answer your question, I would say you probably could use it with sand, but you'd have to do it the same way you would with a siphon, keeping in mind that it will take sand in and trap it in the filter if you're not careful. The actual impeller is magnetically driven and held in place. So if you took in some sand, in my opinion, you're really not going to do a lot of damage to this unit because of the way it's constructed. You can simply remover the clear plastic tube at the end (easy) and pull the impeller off (also easy) and just run everything under tap water and you'll be right back in business.

Thank you for your question. It will work if you have sand in your tank, but because the sand is so light-weight, the Eheim Sludge Extractor will suck up a lot of the sand as well as the gunk you are trying to get rid of. This will happen with any siphon-type cleaner, so the best way to clean sand at the bottom of the tank is just to get as much gunk off the very top layer with the siphon, do not put the siphon down into the sand itself. Just kind-of wave the siphon slowly back & forth over the top layer of sand to get as much off of it as you can.

Not that I'm aware of at this point. It's worth mentioning though, that because of the design of the product I would think they could quite easily manufacture an extension long enough for a tank that deep. So I guess my answer would be, not at the moment, but maybe they'll add that functionality down the road.
