Tips from our Techs
When the filters are not running due to a power outage, it is wise to place your airstones at the top of the aquarium. Under normal conditions, any organic material that is stirred up by airstones placed on the bottom is properly filtered. Placing your airstones at the top of your aquarium during a power outage ensure toxic organic wastes on the bottom are not stirred up and mixed within the aquarium.
Please click on "More Information" for advice on how to reduce oxygen depletion in your aquarium.
One of the first things that happens when your power goes out is that the oxygen level in your aquarium begins to decrease. There are several things that speed the depletion of oxygen including:
A heavy fish load
An increase in temperature
A heavy plant load
Feeding the fish
An increase in fish activity
If you have a heavily stocked aquarium and live in an area where power outages are common, a generator may be a wise purchase to maintain your aeration device, as well as other vital aquarium equipment.
However, consider having a battery-operated air pump, or an airstone or two on hand as an inexpensive alternative. While it will not replace your current airstone or pump, it will add some oxygen back into the water.
Bubbles beautify your aquarium display, improve water quality, and make your aquarium more hospitable for inhabitants. With an air pump, airline tubing, an air check valve, and a touch of creativity, you can easily create a cascade of bubbles.
Air pumps have many different uses. Once you decide what you need an air pump for, selecting the right pump for your application is easy. This article discusses the different types and uses of air pumps.
