The principal of operation on this systems very simple if you understand that setup is easy if not instructions sort of lack but it does work as designed

Love this ATO best one I have ever purchased and I use it on more than 5 different systems ranging from 50 to 900 gallons. Ive never had a failures or damages or malfunctions to any of them. Well worth the price. I have tried other auto top off systems and none compare to the quality of this one.

I threw out a Tunze Osmolator (about $200)
I threw out a Hydor Smart Level Control (about $90)
Because: Both were so inacurate as to be almost worthless.
Tunze was unreliable because the sensor was affected by algae, dirt etc. and rarely correctly adjusted the water level.
Hydor was useless to almost anything less than a 1,000 gal. tank. This is because the difference between the min. level, where the pump turns on, and the max. level, where the pump is turned off, is almost an inch. This is too large a fluctuation for a home salt water fish aquarium. I have a 75 gal.
ATO Controller has been fantastic. I have set both floats, in my aquarium, so that there is only about 1/8 inch or less between pump on and pump off. This makes the water level quite consistant. That's GREAT!
As for the sump, I feel if you have a 75 gal. or larger fish or reef aquarium you should be checking things often enough be sure the sump is full. Filling the sump when needed is a lot easier than trying to maintain a constant level in the actual aquarium.
Don't waste time or money, get the ATO.
I have had salt water fish aquariums for 30 years.

I would recommend this to others to reduce the need to top off their tank. Prior to purchasing this unit I would allow my water level to vary way too much (I'm lazy when it comes to topping off). Now the water level is maintained and I don't have salinity swings (which is obviously what you have happen when lazy and allowing large fluctuations in water volume). Setup time was minimal. Probably took me 10 minutes in totality and then only because some of my equipment is in difficult to reach places. I have not had any issues with operation of the unit as of yet and have had it for a few months now. I will say that if you want it to control the water level to a more exacting standard then make sure you don't have a powerful pump hooked up to the system. If the pump pumps freshwater too quickly, it will always fill to a little higher than the desired depth.
