this flourite substrate is great for planted tanks . my plants are doing very well in it . the only con is that the substrate will leave alot of residue all over your tank even after its been rinsed .

plants love it
i use this as a substrate only (for plants) and under a mudbed in other tanks and works very well for both tanks/ all types of plants. you do however have to use it with liquid ferts, because you cannot provide all the nutrients without them. i recommend putting the substrate down without the water in the tank or it gets cloudy. it may be an eye sore, but it is not bad for the fish. by rinsing it first you are actually removing benificial bacteria and ferts in the substrate. if you dont want to remove the water just run an extra filter for a day, or the main filter will clear the tank within a day. the black and black sand havent raised my ph yet. where other brands do.

Excellent for Planted Tanks!
Use this in both my planted aquariums (one tropical, one Goldfish). The plants to very well! Where most people have issues with this product is in assuming that it's all the plants need to grow. This substrate provides, mainly, the iron that plants need. It doesn't removed the need to add fertilizers! Heavy iron feeding plants really thrive with this substrate!
* Recommend rinsing before using to remove fine particulates. Takes some time, but it will look better.
• Not recommended as exposed layer for big digging fish -- like Goldfish -- because the product has jagged edges the fish tend to get stuck in their mouths. Use for these types of fish with a layer of rounded substrate like River Gravel over the top.
