Life-Glo 2 Fluorescent Light Bulbs 18" 15W
The Hagen "Glo" series of tubes are really the only choice if you need a 48 inch 40 watt t-8 tube. The other companies make only 32 watt t-8 tubes in that length. These do not work as well with 40 watt ballasts - both burning out sooner and generally producing less light. The t-12 tubes available from hardware stores work, but they are also nowhere near as efficient in terms of light output.
I chose Life-Glo over other Glo tubes because of the type of light produced. It is a full spectrum tube which not only produces pleasing, accurate color rendition, but also facilitates the culture of aquatic plants - which I consider important. I believe the light tube definitely worth the price premium and use it in other wattages as well, even though acceptable substitutes do exist in the other wattages.

Good plant light
I use these 20W bulbs in all of my "low to medium light'' planted tanks and find they are very good for plant growth.

Light bulb for aquarium
I have had the new bulb in my tank for three weeks. I haven't noticed any change in my plants. But this is the first time I have tried to have a planted aquarium, so it could be many factors that are not quite right yet in my tank. The plants are not dying though. As far as the F&S site goes, I think it is awesome. It is very well orginized and the information given on each product is very good and thourough.. Thank you Foster and Smith. I have been very happy with all my other purchases. And the prices are competative with other sites. Good sale items also. They actually have things on sale that people use. So sites sale items are always weird odd-ball items that no one orders. Good experience with F&S. Thanks again.
