Filter Media suggested order:
For the best filtration and a crystal-clear, healthy aquarium, Hydor advises placing filter material in your external filter in this order from top to bottom:
Chemical filtration - highly adsorbent activated carbon (not included) eliminates bad odors and polluting substances. (You can substitute Zeolite for carbon to reduce the level of ammonia in new aquariums. Zeolite is not included).
Fine filtration - high-density mechanical sponge that captures small debris (included).
Biological filtration - highly porous sintered quartz Bio-Ring media ideal for optimal biological filtration (included).
Mechanical filtration - highly porous mechanical sponge that captures large debris (included)
Before carrying out any work or maintenance on your aquarium, disconnect all electrical appliances installed inside or outside of it. Check that the voltage indicated on the product corresponds to that of your power supply network. The Professional filter should be located below the level of the aquarium when it is primed. If you wish to position the filter at the side of your aquarium, do so only after the filter has begun functioning.
Preparation of the filter
Place the filter in the position identified (consider whether this will allow for easy handling of the filter during ordinary maintenance operation).
Connect the U-shaped tubes with their flexible tubes, taking care to tighten the ring nuts.
Mount the pre-filter grid onto the suction unit.
Choose the position you consider most appropriate for the suction unit, using the clips with suction caps.
Assemble the delivery unit and choose a position for it, if possible at a distance from the suction unit, in order to ensure effective recirculation.
If you wish, you may apply the perforated bar to improve oxygenation at a 90° angle, positioning it all in the aquarium at the surface of the water.
Cut the flexible tubes to the length required to ensure the water runs through as straight as possible, so as to prevent possible obstruction of the flexible tubes.
Initial installation of filtering materials
For convenience of transport, the filtering materials are positioned inside the filter. The filter must therefore be opened and the required cleaning operations carried out in order to prepare the filter for use. Proceed as follows:
Rotate the safety levers; then unblock the pump unit.
Leaving the levers in the closed position, open the 2 closing hooks by moving them downwards and outwards, then rising them and releasing the head.
Remove the lid of the filtering materials by inserting your fingers into the appropriate holes to facilitate the operation.
Take out the material containers, in which some filtration materials are still sealed.
Open the packs of filtering materials, rinse the materials carefully, and place them in the containers. The number of containers varies, depending on the filter model.
We suggest placing the large-pore sponges at the bottom, the material for biological filtering in the middle of the filter, and the fine-filtering white filter wool at the top (except for model 150).
Repeat the opening operations in reverse, inserting the containers in the sequence defined, taking care to stack them correctly.
Replace the lid of the filtering materials and the head of the filter with the motor.
Remount the pump unit, checking that the safety levers are in the open position and ensuring that the head is properly aligned with the body of the filter. First, close the 2 large hooks at the front and back; then close the safety levers at the sides.
Before closing the hooks or forcing the safety levers, make sure that the filter materials are in their proper position, that the containers of the filtering materials overlap perfectly (with no materials protruding) and that the lid of the filter materials is in the correct position.
Mounting the taps
This is a very important operation. Pay close attention to the position of the taps before carrying out any kind of operation on the filter; if the position is aligned with the flow of the water, they are turned on, if turned to a 90° angle, they are turned off. ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE TAPS ARE TURNED OFF BEFORE CARRYING OUT MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS ON THE FILTER!
Screw the ring nuts of the taps, without forcibly tightening, onto the slanted rotating connector or the pump unit.
Connect the flexible tubes, already cut to size, to the taps. Follow the same procedure used for connecting the collector tubes, tightening the ring nuts.
Connect the delivery tube with the rotating connector marked "OUT" (on the head near the connector) and the suction tube with the connector marked "IN."
CHECK THE CONNECTIONS AND THE HOLD OF THE RING NUTS AFTER 24 HOURS.
Starting the filter
The filter is equipped with an integrated priming system. Using the Start button, the filter can be automatically primed in just a few easy steps.
Make sure both taps are fully open.
Place your fingers and hands in a position that allows you to press the start button located on the top of the filter head.
Vigorously push the button down a few times in rapid succession. This action will cause the filter to fill up rapidly.
When the filter is full of water, and after checking the level of the aquarium, all you have to do to start the filter is insert the plug into the socket.
When the filter starts up, it is normal for some noise to be caused by the elimination of air pockets and/or small air bubbles trapped in the filter material.
This trapped air can be eliminated more quickly by gently tilting the filter to the left and right a few times.
The air will generally be eliminated after a few hours, allowing the filter to operate in silence.
Before carrying out any work or maintenance on your aquarium, disconnect all electrical appliances installed inside or outside of it.
Close both taps, unscrew them, and disconnect them from the filter by unscrewing the ring nuts that fix them to the rotating connectors.
During maintenance operations, the taps must ALWAYS remain connected to the flexible tubes and in the closed position.
When the taps are disconnected, it is normal for a small amount of water present in the taps to run out. We recommend placing a cloth or other absorbent material around the connectors before disconnecting the taps. Leave the taps connected to the tubes.
Once the filter has been disconnected, it is ready for cleaning and maintenance. We recommend opening the filter after placing it in a basin or bathtub.
Move both the safety levers and opening hooks of the filter to the open position.
Lift the head of the filter.
Remove the lid of the filtering materials to access the contents.
You may wish to wash/rinse your filtration sponges, which can be used again. Rinse gently and not too thoroughly; over-rinsing destroys your beneficial bacteria colonies. Ideally, wash your filter sponges in a small amount of water from your aquarium.
If necessary, remove any scale also from the collector tubes, the suction and delivery unit and the flexible tubes, using the cleaning brushes available on the market.
Each time maintenance is carried out, the impeller and its holder, the priming chamber and the various water passages should be cleaned.
Turn the head of the filter and unscrew the lid of the motor. Take out the rotor from the holder and clean it, using a brush if necessary. Do not use solvents or detergents of any kind - use warm water only.
Reassemble the pieces by carrying out the operations described in reverse, taking care to dry the electrical cable and plug if wet.
Reposition the filter as described in the paragraph "Installation," connect the taps and open the levers, shifting them to the vertical position (first OUT then IN); check the connectors are tightened properly and prime the filter as described in the paragraph "Starting the Filter."
Recommended maintenance operations
This appliance is intended for indoor use only and for use in fluids up to 95°F.

The cord of this unit cannot be replaced or repaired. In the event of cord damage, the entire unit must be replaced.
Aquarium canister filters boost exceptional filtering capacity. However, did you know they are also extremely customizable? Learn how to customize your filter to remedy specific water quality concerns.
Whether you're setting up a larger aquarium or simply want to upgrade your existing filter, the versatile and reliable nature of a canister filter makes it a great choice. Use the following chart to determine which canister filter is right for you.
A canister filter is a sealed container filled with various filter media. The principle advantage of canister filters over power filters is their roomy media baskets which can be filled with a variety of filter media to create custom filtration.
Quiet, convenient canister filters are inconspicuously located under your aquarium. All the canister filters we offer are customizable, and can hold a large amount of media (mechanical, chemical, and biological) in varying combinations.
Please note: Return of electrical equipment to Drs. Foster & Smith for exchange or refund is limited to 60 days from the date of purchase. Beyond 60 days, please contact the manufacturer for repair or replacement as covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
