My new betta loves his cave!
I started out with one of those poly-resin decorations from a big-box pet store and started reading reviews about how colors fade and odors can leech out into the water, causing problems. I decided then that I wanted décor to be as safe and as natural as practicality would allow. Even though I am using only silk plants, I am using natural gravel (no colors), and I wanted something natural to provide a safe place for Jonah to hide in and enjoy. I am happy with this product because it is ceramic and not plastic. The colors are realistic and won't fade. The openings may seem small at first, but they are big enough and smooth so that he will not rip his delicate fins. I moved a bit of gravel from where the mouth of the cave rests on the aquarium floor to create a slightly bigger opening, but I am not sure it was necessary. I'm thrilled to see him using it. I recommend it to any environmentally-conscious Betta keeper who wants something safe (non-toxic) and fun in the tank. My tank is 8.5 gallons and the medium-sized cave fits perfectly and still leaves loads of room for plants, even with a bulky filter & heater.
