"All rawhide bones are not created equal."
Pet owners have a lot of questions about rawhide. The first question commonly asked is about quality. If you've ordered our Drs. Foster & Smith brand rawhide bones before, you are probably aware of the differences between our bones and those you may find in a mass market or grocery store.
Bleaching Our bones are cream colored, not white. Many rawhide manufacturers bleach their bones using one or more chemicals. There is no value in bleaching rawhide other than to make them whiter, which, someone decided a long time ago, would appeal more to pet owners. Probably because the bones looked cleaner. One problem with bleaching is that it can remove some of the natural flavor dogs love. And while the chemicals used today to bleach rawhide aren't known to cause health problems, our thoughts are, why have a product with added chemicals when we can offer a better product without chemicals? Dogs certainly don't care if their bones are white or cream colored.
Size and shape You'll also notice that our bones are heavier than same-sized bones you can buy elsewhere. That's because our bones are wrapped tighter, and have more rawhide per bone than others. Dense rawhide bones last longer and are a better value. If you look at less expensive bones, they're not nearly as thick and the knotted ends are often loosely tied.
Rawhide sources and processing
Our bones are premium beefhide from corn-fed American cattle. That's important to us. There's usually no telling where store-bought bones are from. Better quality white rawhide bones generally come from the United States or one of the beef producing South American countries. However, country of origin is no guarantee of quality. There are some bones made in the USA that we refuse to recommend. We have confidence in the bones we recommend only because we had toured and inspected quite a few plants before we found one that lives up to our high quality standards. In the plant we chose, we have witnessed the manufacturing process, seen the methods used to treat the hides, and observed each step in their production. The small U.S. manufacturer that supplies our bones takes pride in their product and feels the same way about quality as we do. Our partnership results in the best rawhide product available. This has given us the assurance to confidently recommend this product.
Is rawhide safe? The second most-asked question regarding rawhide is whether it is safe for puppies to chew. A major U.S. medical school conducted laboratory tests to answer this question. The results showed that in groups of test dogs, even in those fed rawhide three times a day, there were no ill effects.
Dogs will swallow pieces of rawhide and these will pass easily through the digestive tract. Although choking or intestinal obstruction with rawhide is very rare, it could potentially occur and common-sense prevention measures should be taken. A dog chewing a rawhide product should always be supervised. Some dogs may quickly chew and swallow large pieces of rawhide. When your dog has chewed on a piece of rawhide to the point of it becoming soft, take that rawhide chew away and substitute another. Allow the softened rawhide to dry and harden, and it can then be given back to your the dog.
Chewing rawhide is wonderful for removing plaque from your dog's teeth and keeping them cleaner. This in turn, may help stop or slow periodontal disease, a significant problem in many adult dogs.
Buy quality rawhide from a source you can trust. It will not only satisfy your dog's natural urge to chew; it will also help keep him healthy.
Q.
How often should I give my dog rawhide, such as the chips or bones, to chew on? Is giving them one every day too much?
A.
In most cases giving your pet a treat everyday is safe and healthy. The concern with giving pets too many treats is that you can give your pet too many calories. However, if your pet is at a healthy weight, you should not be concerned. As a guideline, our veterinarians recommend making sure that your pet's treats do not make up more than 10% of their food intake.
Dog bones and treats not only reward your dog for good behavior, but also provide dental benefits. Compare products with this helpful comparison chart.
