I purchased the largest size for my mobility impaired geriatric dog (Samoyed) who is sometimes unable to stand up to get to his regular water dish. I place this near where he likes to lay so he has easy access and doesn't get dehydrated. It works well because the sides are low enough he doesn't need to stand up to drink from it, it is heavy enough not to tip over and spill, the edges are finished smooth to the touch and it has been tested to be free of lead & heavy metals. I also think it looks attractive, it could double for a plant saucer. It would also work well for puppies. On the flip side the low sides do make it difficult to carry full of water without spilling so I fill it from a pitcher. It is not super heavy or cumbersome. The thickness of the stoneware was actually thinner than I expected giving a more polished look not rustic & clunky but it is still strong. Does not appear to easily break or chip. I also purchased a smaller one to keep full-time in the cargo area of my SUV. The stoneware will not sun or heat deteriorate like plastic and waterproof fabrics or get hot like metal.

These are nice heavy ceramic dishes with a glass-smooth finish. There are no bubbles or defects in the finish. The outside ring of the bottom surface is unfinished ceramic, so could potentially scratch wood floors (although the dish is heavy enough that it probably wouldn't be pushed around enough to have that effect).
The inside is a deep blue color and the outside is a neutral tan color. My dogs drink from it readily, not preferring the old dish over this one, so they don't notice any smell.
They are breakable, as are any ceramic dishes. One of the dishes in my first order arrived shattered, but Drs Foster and Smith replaced it quickly.
The only thing I dislike about these dishes is that water does not pour out of them cleanly like it will from a stainless steel dish. Water will drip down the sides. I like to pour leftover dog water into my houseplants, but this dish would drip everywhere if I tried it. To be fair, that's probably not something most people would even consider.

I love the crock bowls. My youngest pit loves to carry food bowls around and chew on them. Can't do it with these. Love, love, love them.

Crockery keeps water cooler and is much healthier than plastic bowls - which can be chewed. It's too heavy for small puppies to tip and play with - as was the case with her metal bowl. It can chip if dropped, tho.The large holds a good amount of water, but I have to fill it daily for my Lab.
