The key to healthy ears is to keep them clean. Check your pet's ears weekly. A slight amount of waxy buildup may be present in normal ears. If your pet has a history of ear disease, routine cleaning - 1 to 2 times per week - is recommended. Excess hair around the ear can be clipped to allow more airflow. Treat any underlying condition that predisposes your pet to ear problems, such as allergies.

How to Clean Your Pet's Ears: Cleaning your pet's ears routinely is a great way to prevent infections, but to be effective it needs to be done quickly, thoroughly, and painlessly. Following these four easy steps will provide you veterinary-like results:

1. Restraint: There is an old Veterinary adage that success is "all in the holder." This is especially true with cleaning ears. Have your pet sit or lie down and make sure the environment is well lit. If your pet is active, have someone gently but firmly hold the pet and his head still. Placing a smaller pet up on a table may make restraint easier.

2. Fold and Lift: Fold the pad in half and then gently lift and wipe the deepest part of the ear first. Use mild pressure and work the pad gently into the folds while sweeping the dirt and wax toward the edge of the ear. On very dirty ears this may take two or three passes.

3. Fold and Wipe: After the deep part of the ear is clean, unfold the pad and turn over to the clean side, or take a new pad. Then, while firmly grasping the ear, wipe the outer edges of the ear with a circular motion until they are clean.

4. Reward: The final step is a reward. Whether verbal praise or a treat, a reward will go a long way in making your pet feel this is a positive experience. Many pets enjoy having their ears cleaned and will actually get excited when they see the jar of Ear Clens Pads come out of the cabinet.
