Cat Grass and other Greens
We frequently receive questions from concerned cat owners regarding the inclusion of greens in their cat's diet. Though cats are obligate carnivores that must eat meat to receive proper nutrition, some cats do seem to enjoy eating grass and houseplants.
Many believe plant material is normal in a cat's diet. In the wild, cats tend to consume all of their prey, and since they eat many herbivores with plant material inside of them, they get the added nutrients not found in high levels in meat.
House cats' habit of eating grass is essentially a normal behavior. Many house cats seem not only to enjoy it, but also crave it. Providing grass specifically catered for cats offers a good outlet for chewing behavior. Your cat may be less inclined to leave punctures and tears in your houseplants if you place cat grass around your home.
Cat grass provides a good source of the vitamins riboflavin and folic acid, as well as fiber. It is also thought that the chlorophyll contained in live plants may have a sweetening effect on the breath, as well as helping reduce fecal and urine odors.
