Q. What are the advantages of using LED lighting for my aquarium?
A. Advances in LED technology have propelled it to become the top choice for satisfying the aquarium illumination needs of reef enthusiasts. LEDs have many benefits over other popular forms of aquarium lighting, including metal halides and T5 tubes.
LED lights have proven to be significantly more energy efficient than metal halides, requiring far less energy. Reef hobbyists can expect further savings in monthly electricity bills due to another characteristic of LEDs - unlike metal halides, our LED lights radiate heat away from the water, which can significantly reduce or eliminate the need for a chiller.
Acan LED light feature specially designed and manufactured LED bulbs with a life expectancy of approximately 50,000 hours, or over 5 years of typical use. Both metal halides and fluorescent tubes must be replaced significantly more often, and light reduction is much more drastic over the lifespan of these types of bulbs.
Acan LED light contains white and blue LED bulbs, which enable various automatic light stages - Daylight, Sunrise/Sunset, and Moonlight, to simulate the natural light cycle and create stunning illumination which really shows off your aquarium.
LED lights emit only a fraction of the UV radiation compared to metal halides, eliminating the danger to light-sensitive corals.
Q. What type and brand of LED bulbs are used in Acan Lighting fixtures?
A. The A104AC uses so-called 3-watt LED bulbs with similar specifications as Cree XPG. Manufacturers who drive 3 watts to each bulb can potentially cut down their production costs by reducing the number of bulbs and lenses used, but this comes at the expense of reliability and efficiency. In contrast, in order to maximize longevity, and lumens, Acan LED lights drive approximately 1 to 1.3 watts to each "bulb."
Q. Can the intensity of the lights be controlled?
A. Fixtures designated with a model number ending in "C" all feature an advanced programmable controller that allows you to separately adjust the intensity percentage (from 0% to 100%) of the white, blue and moonlight. This allows the user maximum flexibility to tailor the light output and color of the LEDs based on need and preference. Intensity control is available on all five programmable time stages in "Auto" mode, and well as in "Manual" mode (setting "HA-1"). Please see the user guide for instructions on how to program the controller.
Q. What is the color temperature of the lights?
A. The color temperature for the white LEDs is 12,000K and Blue LEDs is 460nm.
Q. How do I use the included tank mounting kit (legs and feet)?
A. All Acan Lighting LED fixtures are shipped with both ceiling hanging and tank-mounting kits, allowing you to customize your system. The tank-mounting legs and feet included with the 18" length will allow the fixture to mount to tanks up to 6" wider, and the bracket included with the fixture will allow it to mount to tanks up to 12" wider.
Q. How do I use the included ceiling hanging kit?
A. The ceiling hanging mounts included with each LED light gives you the most flexibility in the positioning of your fixture. If hanging your LED lights, manufacturer recommends positioning the fixture at a height of at least 30 inches from the bottom of the tank and up to 36" high depending on your specific application. In other words, if you have a 24-inch high tank, you should hang the lights at least 6 inches from the surface of the water. Raising the height of the fixtures allows the light to spread out and provide more coverage to the sections of the tank that are not directly under the light. For the first few weeks of use, you should closely monitor your livestock and adjust the height of the fixture as well as the duration of each light stage, as needed.
Q. What is the proper duration of time to program for each light stage?
A. The length of time you should program for each of the various light stages will depend on a number of factors, including the size of your tank and the lighting demands of your specific corals. The programmable controller gives you the flexibility to tailor the use of the LED lights based on the specific needs of your tank.
With the adjustable intensity control feature of this model, you have the ultimate flexibility in creating the perfect automatic daily light cycle to give your corals the light they need and show off the beauty of your tank. For Time Stage 1, manufacturer recommends starting with around 5% white, 100% blue, and 100% moon, and let that stage run for an hour or more. After that, you can program in higher intensities for the white light, but carefully monitor your corals to see how they respond. For shallower tanks, and for those tanks that have lower requirements, it may not be necessary to use 100% intensity for the lights. As a reef keeper, you will quickly figure out what is the best combination of light intensity and duration for your aquarium!
