Omega Fatty Acids and your horse
A horse's skin and coat are naturally exposed to many elements including pollens, pollutants in the air, and other airborne substances.
Horses need a proper balance of both Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids for optimal health and performance. Each of these important fatty acids has a different role to play in a horse's health.
Scientific research has shown that certain Omega-3 fatty acids work in the skin, joints, liver, kidney, and other organs to help regulate the cell's response to certain chemical factors and stabilize healthy cells against the effects of potentially destructive substances.
To support a healthy coat, we recommend products high in Omega-6 fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. Linoleic acid (LA) supports the proper function of the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin. Without the proper production of skin oils, the coat can look dry and lusterless. In addition, LA helps to prevent water loss from the skin and the subsequent drying out. Sunflower oil and safflower oil are especially high in LA. |
| Comparison Chart | | Because hooves, skin, and haircoat all derive from similar tissue, some hoof supplements can also help your horse achieve healthy skin and a glossy haircoat. Some common ingredients that benefit your horse's hooves are biotin, methionine, and zinc. |
| | Hoof Health from the Inside Out with Supplements | | The condition of a horse's hooves, coat, and skin are generally a reflection of his overall health. Good hoof care keeps you on top of your horse's hoof health. Many factors are responsible for your horse's hoof condition. |
| | | Hoof Problems Are A Whole Horse Problem | | No hoof, no horse, is a popular saying that couldn't be more true. Healthy hooves are among the most important things you can give your horse. This chart is a brief description of common hoof problems, with some suggested for hoof products. |
