I recently took in a foster dog (a senior Miniature Dachshund) that was surrendered to the shelter, but had to immediately go to the vet for surgery to remove 5 large bladder stones. After spending 3 days at the vet, I picked her up and brought her to my home. Following surgery, she needed 4 various daily meds, 6X/day, for up to 2 weeks. I have always had great success with "hiding" pills in pill pockets, cheese, peanut butter, hot dogs, etc. Not with this old girl!!!
At first, she absolutely refused anything I gave her to even eat, much less hide a pill in it. (Which was most probably due to pain, loss of home, being shuffled around to so many places in a short time.) So, naturally, I had to resort to pushing all these daily pills by hand. She's quite tiny, so that made it even more difficult to shove these pills down her throat.
So, I started searching for a pill pusher. Since I regularly shop online at F&S anyway, I found this one, and it was reasonably priced, so I added it to the rest of my order. I decided not to go with the other pill pusher that has the soft rubber tip, because of bad reviews on other sites...mainly about that rubber tip.
The split end of this pill pusher is its best feature, in my opinion! It's actually an extension of the plastic barrel itself...not an attachment...and is split to form a 4-way "grabber", with nicely rounded tips. It firmly holds that pill in place, with plenty of tension, so the pill doesn't fall out. It will spread quite wide, to accommodate a really large pill. It also springs back into shape, to return the end of the barrel to a basket-like form that won't allow smaller pills to fall out the end.
If your pill will fit inside the barrel, I recommend loading it from the top. My first efforts of trying to spread that grabber apart, for a large pill, were sort of frustrating because it's fairly stiff. When I finally hit on a method, it was much easier. I fully extended the plunger out the end of the barrel (this spreads the grabber slightly open), placed the pill (turned sideways) on the platform end of the plunger, then shoved the pill back up into the grabber as far as it would go. The grabber fingers closed around it and held it in place.
Others have stated that their small pills have fallen out. I can see where that might happen, but those pills would have to be extremely small...at least, on the one I have.
Others have also stated that the split end wants to stay opened slightly and not spring back into place. It's important to retract the plunger back up into the barrel, immediately after dispensing, and give the end a slight squeeze to close it up, just for good measure. Also, do not store the pill pusher with the plunger fully extended, to avoid having the grabber retain this slightly opened state. Storing it with a rubber band around the grabber might also help it keep its shape and spring-action.
The adjustable finger guard is also a nice feature. It really helps to steady the pill pusher in your hand if you snug it up to your finger.
Easy to clean, feels substantial, smooth plunger action, well worth the price paid for the hassle it eliminates...what more could you ask for???

This pill dispenser can accommodate tablets or capsules. I had no problem giving my cat both forms of pills with this product (well, after I tightly wrapped him in a towel so he couldn't disembowel me!) It's a really simple, easy to use design. I would definately buy this again.
