What should I discuss with my veterinarian while considering RenaKare?
Talk to your veterinarian about what type of outcome is expected. Have your veterinarian explain the other treatment options that may be available to treat your pet's condition. Understand what exams and laboratory testing may be necessary while your pet is taking RenaKare.
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism) or heart disease.
Notify your veterinarian of any other medications or supplements your pet is taking. Also if your pet has had any reactions to previous medications.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
What is the most important information I should know?
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has vomiting or diarrhea while on RenaKare. Follow your veterinarian's directions carefully; dosages may change depending upon laboratory results.
Who should not take it?
Do not use in animals with hyperkalemia (high potassium blood levels), severe kidney disease, acute dehydration, untreated Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism), or hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells). Do not use tablet forms in animals with constipation. Use with caution in animals with heart disease, particularly those taking the medication digoxin.
What side effects may be seen when taking RenaKare?
May cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, especially if not given with food.
How is it stored?
Store tightly closed at room temperature, between 59-86°F. Because the gel is flavored and appealing to animals, store in a secure area to prevent an accidental overdose. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
What should I do if I know of or suspect there has been an overdose?
If you know or suspect your pet has had an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately.
What should I avoid when giving my pet RenaKare?
Consult your veterinarian before giving potassium supplementation with any other medications, including vitamins and supplements, enalapril, digoxin, spironolatone, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, etodolac (EtoGesic), deracoxib (Deramaxx), or carprofen (Rimadyl), since interactions may occur.
