What are the benefits?

* May also be used to treat vasculitis
* Fewer side effects than some other anti-inflammatory medications

Sulfasalazine is a prescription medication used to treat inflammatory conditions of the bowel including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and chronic colitis.

How does Sulfasalazine work?
The exact mechanism of action of Sulfasalazine in treating inflammatory bowel disease is unknown. Most of the oral drug is not absorbed into the blood stream, but remains in the intestine where it does its work.

Is there a generic equivalent available?
Sulfasalazine is a generic medication.

How is it given?
Sulfasalazine is given by mouth.

Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian. Use all of the medication prescribed, even if your pet appears well. If the entire course of treatment is not given, the infection may recur or worsen.

What results can I expect?
Sulfasalazine will not produce immediate effects, nor will it cure the condition. Generally the medication will need to be given for two or more weeks before effects are seen. At that point, your veterinarian may lower the dose. Do NOT lower the dose unless directed to by your veterinarian.
