What is the life cycle of fleas?
There are four stages in the development of fleas: eggs and adults. Male and female fleas mate and two days later the female flea starts laying eggs. The eggs are often laid on the animal, but because they are not sticky, fall off into the environment. Along with the eggs, the female flea deposits a large amount of feces (often called "flea dirt"). The flea dirt will dissolve into a red color when moistened; this is because it is primarily digested blood. The flea lays 30-50 eggs per day, generally in batches of 3 to 15. A flea can produce 400-1,000 eggs in her lifetime (several months to two years, depending on the species). Two days (or more depending on temperature) after the egg is laid it hatches and the larva, which looks like a tiny maggot, starts to feed on the feces left by its mother. The larva passes through several phases of development taking a total of about a week. At that time the larvae starts spinning a cocoon and is called a pupa. The cocoon is sticky and will often become covered with fine dirt or sand, and can be found deep in carpet or crevices. In a week the pupa develops into an adult and emerges from the cocoon when it senses vibrations, carbon dioxide, or warmth which tell it an animal host is near. The entire life cycle takes about 15 days, but the pupa can remain dormant under inhospitable conditions (e.g., cold) and extend the cycle to over a year. This is important to remember when planning flea control.
Advantage® will continue to work if you bathe your animal on a regular basis. If your pet requires frequent bathing, reapplication may be required more than once monthly.
The manufacturer does not recommend using more than one tube, even if your dog is over 55 lbs. The frequency of application may be adjusted; talk to your veterinarian to determine whether you should apply Advantage more often than once a month.
Is this product safe for use around small children? Is it toxic to humans?
A.
As with any flea product, you should take care while applying to your pet. After application, wash your hands with soap and water to make sure that the Advantage® doesn't irritate your skin. Advantage® dries very fast and should not harm people petting the treated animal. Small children should avoid handling the treated pet for a day or two until the product is fully absorbed into the oil glands in the skin.
What is the difference between Advantage® & BioSpot®?
A.
BioSpot® and Advantage® are both topical flea products. They both kill adult fleas. BioSpot® will also repel fleas and contains an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) which kills the flea eggs and stops development. The permethrin in BioSpot® repels and kills mosquitoes and ticks.

My Border Terrier, Brodie, has been through so many flea treatments it's not even funny. When they don't work, I always turn to Advantage®. Why? It works. This product is super dependable. The only thing bad about it is it can be a bit expensive. But you can shampoo your dog after applying, which is great - Brodie needs 2 or 3 baths a month!
I have always been an avid pet lover, and in the past 25 years have always lived with dogs and cats but unfortunately always had to deal with fleas in my home. Back in May, we returned home from a trip to Italy. When we walked into our home, you could feel the fleas nipping at your ankles. We had a huge problem. So I decided to try Advantage®. We were amazed at the results. Just a day after we applied Advantage® on both our dog and indoor cat, we checked their stomachs and bodies to see if it had worked. To my surprise we couldn't even track down one live flea. We then gave them both a quick bath to rid them of the dead fleas still lingering in their fur and vacuumed up the house. Every first of the month, I apply their Advantage®. That's it! Once a month for one minutes' work. NO MORE FLEAS!!
My Pekingese had a huge flea problem and I tried everything from shampoos to powders and sprays but nothing worked. Just a few minutes after the treament, the fleas would be back, worse than ever. The poor thing was constantly scratching and totally miserable. Then I tried Advantage and was amazed at the results. Within a couple of hours, her scratching lessened and the next day I couldn't find one flea!! It seemed too good to be true so I checked every day for a month and still couldn't find any. Advantage may be a bit expensive but it's worth it because it really works!!
Don't bother with any other product! Advantage does the job amazingly well.
We were overwhelmed with fleas this year and no amount of flea combing, vacuuming and laundering seemed to put a dent in the population. The situation grew desperate and with fingers crossed I tried Advantage. By the next day there were NO fleas! NONE. It is amazing stuff, considering in an average day I would get more than 200 fleas off our 9 pets combined. (I have tried Biospot in the past with very little success, and the pets hated it when I put it on them. This stuff works and is really worth the price.)
This is the best. Use Advantage with a good flea shampoo and spray your house if needed and your flea problem will be gone in no time at all! I had a bad infestation of fleas, we live near woods. I used Advantage on my dogs AND cats then flea bathed the dogs. My problem was solved. This stuff is THE BEST.
