Should our pump be turned off each night?

We have a relatively new 4800 gallon pond with two water falls and a spillway and a deep area for the koi. We have a total of 9 small goldfish and small koi. My husband believes the pump should be shut off all night every night. I believe the fish would suffer and the pond would as a whole be negatively affected. Can you settle this for us? We just want to know what is best for our pond and our precious fish! THANKS!

Your circulation pump should normally be run 24 hrs per day, 7 days per week, 52 weeks per year unless you have hard winter freezes. This would always be true if your bio filter is in line with this water flow. The good bacteria begin dying within hours of loss of oxygenated water flow. Also, oxygen levels can drop dangerously low in a pond, especially at the bottom overnight. So, unless you have a separate aerator which is running, you should leave your water circulating continuously to prevent this as well.

We had the same problem and this summer I drained the pond (siphoned as much as I could and then used a bucket), removed the old liner and then re-dug out the pond. I then put in a new felt pad over which I put a new rubber liner (12X15). We then ordered 4 tons of river rocks (3 of the 6' to 8' variety and the one ton of smaller rocks... we only needed 1/2 ton of the small ones). I bought a waterfall kit, put it in and my wife couldn't be happier. The goldfish think it is very cool and so do the neighbors but after moving four tons of rocks three times I'm not for hire. I tried to load a picture but this site won't take it.

Thank you for your question. I am assuming, since you say the pond sat for 4 years, that there are no more koi in it. If that's the case, your best bet will be to drain & clean the pond before refilling it with water & adding the appropriate equipment. http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.c... It will depend on how the pond is getting muddy. What type of substrate (if any) do you have? Is there rainwater runoff that is causing the water to be churned up?

Thank you for your question. Without proper filtration, pond water can quickly go "stagnant." Accumulation of organic debris, excess sunlight and warm temperatures can escalate this process. Severe discoloration and strong foul odors are good indications that your pond water quality is compromised.
