Joint Supplements for Horses: Compare All Drs. Foster & Smith Educational Staff
Supplements are given to either slow the loss of cartilage, aid in the making of new cartilage, or slowing the destruction of the joint fluid. Conditions which may benefit from the use of joint supplements include:
Arthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, in which the cartilage in the joints is being worn down faster than new cartilage can be made.
Joint injury, in which the cartilage may have been damaged.
Joint surgery, in which the cartilage may have been damaged prior to surgery, during the surgery, or may experience extra stresses after the surgery.
Joints that experience a large amount of stress due to exercise and training.
Some ingredients in joint supplements for horses include glucosamine, hyaluronic acid (HA), chondroitin, MSM and also combinations of these and other ingredients. Check the chart below to see what ingredients each supplement has so you can decide what is best for your horse.
