There is a wealth of jargon used throughout the horse world. This is especially true when discussing internal equine parasites, or worms. For instance, the medications used to control worms are technically known as "dewormers" but commonly referred to as "wormers." Learning this vocabulary allows you to better understand articles, event language, and what trainers, farriers, veterinarians, and |
other horse owners are saying. The following list of terms, while in no way comprehensive, contains some of the terms used to discuss horse worms and their control.
Anthelmintics: Name given to the various deworming medications used to control equine internal parasites.
Ascarids: A type of equine intestinal parasite, also known as roundworms.
Bots: A type of stomach parasite. Bots are the larvae of hairy, bee-like flies of the genus Gasterophilus. The flies deposit eggs on the hair shaft of the forelegs and chest of the horse and look like yellowish dots; the eggs are swallowed and develop into bots.
Helminths: Parasitic worms.
Roundworms: Common name for ascarids, an intestinal equine parasite.
Strongyles: Equine internal parasite, also known as bloodworms.
Tapeworms: A Type of internal equine parasite.
