Digestive Health Starts with the Right Cat Food

When choosing a cat food, make sure it is a complete, healthy food designed specifically for cats.

A cat's digestive health is essential for a long and healthy life. Not unlike a human's digestive system, a cat's consists mainly of the mouth, the esophagus, the stomach, the small intestine, and the large intestine. What a cat can metabolize effectively is where the similarities stop.

The cat has very different nutritional needs than any other animals, because felines are obligate carnivores and their body structures have adapted to a strictly carnivorous diet. In fact, in the wild, cats naturally choose high quality, high protein foods. Cats are unable to adjust to a lower protein diet. They are dependent on specific nutrients that can only be found in sufficient quantities in animal products, including the amino acids arginine and taurine, the essential fatty acid arachidonic acid, and some vitamins. All of these are found in concentration in meats.

Finicky cats are not just in TV commercials

The fact is, cats have definite tastes in food and many are very picky eaters. Cats are so fussy about their food, in fact, that they may refuse food they don't like, even to the point of starvation. "Palatability" is the catch phrase when it comes to choosing a food that is just right for your cat. Some cats love fish, others dislike it, some like liver, others do not. Your particular cat may like canned food or may prefer dry.

There are benefits to both: dry foods are excellent for naturally keeping teeth plaque free, while canned food naturally contains more moisture, and the more moisture (water) your cat gets, the better.

When selecting a cat food, choose a food that is healthy for your cat and that your cat enjoys. And then stick with it. Although some cats like variety, most cats will do fine on one food.

If you must introduce a different food to your cat, make sure to do it slowly. Mix the new food into the old, slowly increasing the proportion of the new food daily, until you have switched completely over to the new food.

As veterinarians, we firmly believe that your pet's good health starts from the inside out. We formulated our cat foods so that they do not contain artificial ingredients, preservatives, colors, flavors, or by-products. They contain only specially selected natural ingredients that meet or exceed AAFCO* standards. Real chicken meat provides essential amino acids for healthy tissues. Fresh, whole fruits and vegetables, full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants promote a strong immune system and healthy cell growth. We've also included Omega-3 fatty acids to help keep skin healthy as well as to promote a soft, lustrous coat.

We offer formulas for every stage of your cat's life and even a specialty formula for hairball control. Our healthy pet foods offer the ultimate in nutrition, freshness, and taste while providing your pet with optimal health benefits - increased energy, healthier skin and coat, improved muscle tone, and better disease resistance - benefits that only excellent nutrition can provide.
