A Clean Cage is Key to Bird's Health

A Clean Cage is Key to Bird's Health Cleaning Tips
ne of the most important things you can do to keep your bird healthy is to clean his cage, play stands, and accessories regularly. Once you work out a consistent schedule, you'll find these tasks can be done quickly and efficiently, promoting a healthy environment for your bird.
Clean These Items Daily:
Liners - Replace the liner of the cage. Some owners place several layers in the cage, so they only have to peel away the top one for maintenance.

Cage Catcher Liners are economical and they eliminate the need to save messy newspapers.

Dishes and Accessories - Food and water dishes, bottles, birdbaths, and toys that are used daily (or soiled upon) should be washed in hot, soapy water or run through the dishwasher. Rinse and dry each item thoroughly before placing back in cage.

Clean These Items Weekly:
Generally, the cages of larger birds, lories, and lorikeets need to be cleaned and disinfected weekly using bird-safe solutions. With certain smaller birds, a bi-weekly or even monthly routine may be sufficient. Place a garbage can next to the cage, and follow these steps:

Assemble supplies: You may want to purchase a plastic bucket to hold all your supplies, so they're in one spot when you need them. It will also come in handy for holding hot, soapy water. Supplies should include:

Remove the bird to safe surroundings, preferably an alternate cage in another room. Also, remove all toys and accessories from the cage as well as cage liners. This is a good time to soak toys to remove dried-on debris. This is also a good time to check the toys to see if any have become worn or damaged and need to be removed for safety reasons.

Scrub away any seeds or loose droppings from the cage. Poop-Off works great for loosening dried-on matter.

Scrub the entire cage with hot, soapy water. Use a small scrub brush to access dried-on matter in hard-to-reach spots. Rinse well with plain water and dry thoroughly. Do the same with toys, perches, drinking bottles, and other accessories.

Apply Natural Chemistry Healthy Habitat to clean and deodorize.

Empty and wash the cage apron or seed skirt and the area underneath the cage. This is also a good time to scrub the tile, vinyl, or plastic carpet runner underneath the cage.

When all items are completely dry, place them back in the cage. Fill food and water cups or bottles, and replace the cage liner.
Lastly, place your bird back into his newly-cleaned home, and rest-assured you're doing a great job at keeping your bird's environment healthy.
