Cat Eye Care FAQs

Cat Eye Care Cat Eye Care FAQs

  • Will an ophthalmic ointment clear an eye infection?

  • How can I perform daily cleanings in and around the eyes?

  • How do I apply eye ointments?

  • Can I use all of your eye care products on my cat?

  • Does my pet need eye exams?
Yes, it is important for you to look closely at your pet's eyes frequently. Since she is not able to remove irritants, you must keep her eyes free of discharge, debris, and dust to prevent allergic reactions or painful infections. If you see redness or inflammation, contact your veterinarian to have your cat's eyes examined.

What is the best way to clean tear stains in cats?
Tear stains can be a problem for certain cat breeds, such as some Persians, so we suggest more frequent cleaning around the eye to help prevent stains in the first place. We recommend our Eye Clens® Eye Wash.

Is there a way I can protect my cat's eyes from soap when bathing her?
Yes, prior to bathing, you can apply a lubricating, non-medicated ointment to both eyes.

Will an ophthalmic ointment clear an eye infection?
It depends on the type of infection. Always consult your veterinarian if you think your pet has an eye infection. Some ointments, such as Terramycin, contain antibiotics, and may be recommended by your veterinarian for eye infections. Protective ophthalmic ointments are sterile ointments, but do not have antibiotics in them and are not designed to treat eye infections.

How can I perform daily cleanings in and around the eyes?
For daily flushing of debris and discharge, we recommend Eye Clens® Eye Wash & Pads. Its gentle formulation works much like your pet's own tears to flush away irritants. You can use it in the eye, as well as externally to remove discharge and debris that has settled in the corners of the eyes.

How do I apply eye ointments?
Always wash your hands first. Apply a short ribbon of ointment along the inside of the lower lid, starting at the inside corner of the eye. As your pet blinks, the ointment will spread over the surface of the eye. Ointments will blur your animal's vision for a few minutes after administration, so prevent your pet from bumping into things and becoming injured.

Can I use all of your eye care products on my cat?
Most of our eye-care products can be used on cats, with the exception of Show Eyes® and Show Eyes® Pads, which are formulated for dogs only.
