S.M.A.R.T. TIPS
for Responsible Reefkeeping
PRESERVING THE REEF AQUARIUM HOBBY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
Learn how S.M.A.R.T. reefkeeping can help you best navigate potential ethical dilemmas and always embrace best practice and care of aquatic life.
The Issue
When reef aquarium hobbyists delve deeper into reefkeeping, it becomes more difficult to ignore the complexities around this rewarding hobby. Increasing news regarding the declining health of the world's coral reefs seemingly pits our passion for reefkeeping against our concern for the welfare of these reefs. However, reef aquarists are the best advocates for coral conservation simply by participating in S.M.A.R.T. practices.
S.M.A.R.T. Reefkeeping
Responsible reefkeeping and education always go hand in hand. Prior to each coral purchase, research the species' husbandry and care requirements, as well as where and how your corals were harvested. Whenever possible, pursue and participate in the following:
Sustainable Coral Species - Include those with a wide natural distribution or with healthy natural populations, or from regions with strict harvest protocols.
Maricultured Corals - Are propagated overseas and grown out in shallow protected lagoons or in outdoor raceways using natural sunlight and ocean water.
Aquacultured Corals - Are propagated from stock that has been grown out and adjusted to a captive environment.
Restoration of Coral Reefs - Support organizations and companies such as the Coral Restoration Foundation that share your dedication to preserve and pass the legacy of healthy coral reefs.
Trade of Propagated Corals - Trade or sell home propagated corals at local coral frag swaps to alleviate demand placed on corals harvested from the ocean.

Use quality coral propagation tools to play your role in preserving the reef aquarium hobby for future generations.

Coral Restoration Foundation The Coral Restoration Foundation Inc. (CRF) is a 501c(3) non-profit conservation organization created to develop off-shore coral nurseries and reef restoration programs for critically endangered coral reefs at local, national, and international levels. Their goal is to enhance and promote awareness of coral reef health and survival, engage communities in nursery and restoration efforts, and to grow and restore threatened coral species and enhance reproductive output to stimulate a natural recovery.
