I have a 37 gallon tank with a LED light and am wanting to get live plants to help out baby guppies

what will grow under the led lighting and allow cover for the baby guppies?

Answer:

I am not familiar with LED, but I have always used floating Anacharis and I have, more recently, floating Cabomba or similar(I believe) also .
These have always worked well for my guppies (forty years, off & mostly on ).
If you are breeding for production you'll need to remove any other types of fish & keep adult guppies well fed, or remove them also.

Thank you for your question. Anubias plants may make an ideal solution, without knowing exactly how much light your LED's output. Anubias are hardy in even low light conditions, and the broad leaves make idea shelter areas for baby guppies.

Depending on what the light requirements are, for the type of plants you have in your tank, will pretty much dictate which lightning will be best. The N.O. Flourescent tubes that came with your aquarium, do not produce enough light to benefit your plants. 2 watts per gallon is a good number to work with, how you get that is your choice. You can use the fixtures you have and install CF kit into them and get the wattage you need. You can replace the fixtures with a plug and play set up and use any format out there. LED, T-5 HO, HID, CF or a combination of these lights to get the results you dersire. Be ready for sticker shock as some set up's are pricy.

LED are a great choice for any type of aquarium, lots of benefits from, no algae is promoted by light , led last forever, shimmer effect for a planted aquarium I would try a 12k/453 combo , or an UV type, LED has multiple color choices from.

the most popular add on is a small blue led strip for a bluer color. no it wont support corals. if you are going to be using it for a reef tank a diy high power led retrofit would need to be built. if thats the case lurk around nano-reef.com and you should find what you need.

I own an aqua medic Ocean T light fixture, it has two 150 W MH bulbs and two T5 bulbs ,is it possible to put 250W MH bulbs in?

Hi I'm an industrial electrician. If the sockets are the same with they may or may not be I have never checked. You would need to replace the ballasts with 250 watt ones. 250 watt bulbs will not burn up the 150 watt ballast they just will not light up. A ballast will only supply the wattage it was designed to putting a larger bulb in it will not change that fact. Hope that helps.

Feets! Highly doubtful if this is how it was manufactured. Typically the ballast will state the maximum watt output which is more than likely 150W. Therefore if you put the 250W bulbs in they will not burn at the full capacity and may damage the ballast. Check the owners manual or open the unit up and see what the maximum output is for the MH. Usually stated on the ballast sticker.

No your ballasts are designed for a specific wattage you will fry the ballast trying to push that many watts

Do I need a new lighting fixture?

My 29 gallon tank came with a lighting fixture which included a 17 watt florescent bulb. Articles that I read say that I need 2-3 watts per gallon. This equates to 60-90 watts of light. Do I need a new fixture for adequate lighting or will the one that came with the aquarium kit do the job? Thanks.

if you are doing freshwater low light plants or a marine fish only or non-photosynthetic it would work. if you are doing a marine reef or medium to high light planted freshwater aquarium no it wont work. normal output florescent fixtures like yours are pretty much made for the fish to see, thats it. your tank would require a 30" wide light fixture. i suggest a 4 bulb t5ho or 150w halide of doing a reef tank. freshwater planted could need the same but older compact florescent lights would work as well. watts per gallon is useless now.

All depends on what you want in your tank if you just have fish than you don't need any specific lighting if you want live plants than you need more powerful lights and even more for corals if you are doing saltwater the watts per gallon is not always very accurate for a 29 gallon you have many options but again depends on what you have in the tank

It depends on whether or not you plan on using live plants. For live plant growth you definitely want at least two watts per gallon, although with all the new high output lighting, the watts/gallon rule is beginning to be less important, in my opinion. If you don't want real plants than the lighting that the tank came with will suffice. Be sure to turn it off at regular times each night as fish benefit from a natural night and day cycle.
