What kind of plants would angel fish like?

I have a 10 gallon tank with one angel fish a zebra danio and a Percosamus. What kind of plants should I get?

Answer:

Angelfish love to lay their eggs on a large Amazon Swordplant or similar large leaf tall plant that grows fairly thickly. I actually have two separate breeding pairs in a 250 gallon tank using two different sword plants.

This is almost an impossible question to answer because what you put in your tank for decoration should be very personal. Those fish are not redecorators so any plant that you choose that you like the look of should do well. If you want real plants (my preference) I'd stay away from the all consuming big stuff (wysteria, cabomba, large swords) in such a little tank unless you're prepared to constantly trim them. They will dominate the tank. Contortion val, jungle val, hair grass, etc are good choices because they are smaller and will fit the tank better. I've also seen some small tanks that look great with fake plants too.

The angelfish will probably not be happy in a tank that small when it grows larger. As far as plants go, Java fern or Anubias planted lightly wil be fine, but make sure not to get too many.

Thank you for your question. A common aquarium plant that is native to the natural environment of the Angelfish is the Amazon Sword Plants (Echinodorus). It is a hardy plant and can be found in more than 50 different species. Other examples of suitable plants are Java Moss (Vesicularia dubyana), Java Fern (Polypodium pteropus) and Water Sprite (Ceratopteris).

Air pumps can be very useful in taller tanks to make sure that not only water but nutrients and gases are adequately circulated around the tank; preventing "dead zones." I tend to use an air stone along one side wall to create circular flow in the tank, without disturbing too much of the plants or evaporating too much of the water.

I've never heard of air stones or diffusers have a negative effect on water quality. Just the opposite, they disturb the surface tension and promote good transfer. So long as there aren't so many stones in the tank that the fish have to swim through the bubbles you're fine.

If you are using a CO2 System then too much surface agitation can lower the CO2 in the water that the plants need to thrive.

I'm not an expert here but I'd be concerned that the coating would eventually crack and you would inevitably have rust issues with the metal underneath which would greatly effect water quality. I'd hate to have to see you rip out your planted wall after a while because of such problems. I don't know how corrosion of the galvanizing may effect water quality.

Galvanized metal will kill any invertebrates you add to the planted tank (the zinc is toxic to them). But, if you don't plan on adding invertebrates or sensitive fish, it shouldn't be a problem.

Flourish is a combination of chemical nutrients such as iron, manganese, calcium, magnesium, potassium, inositol, choline B12, and biotin. Flourish excell, on the other hand, is a source of organic carbon that can be used in a planted tank either as a substitute for or in conjunction with added CO2. Some users find that adequate dosing or excel slows down algea growth in a planted tank.

I use them both and asked the same question. Here is what I learned...
FLOURISH is the minerals etc. that are good and needed by your plants. It's like taking a daily vitamin - it has all the stuff you need.
EXCEL is what you would use if you don't have a CO2 system. It's basically a liquid form of CO2 (but not as effective). It is useful and has made a noticeable difference in my planted tank. What this does it promote growth to your plants the way a CO2 system would. Some people would argue that this stuff doesn't work and isn't a replacement for CO2. All I know is my plants grow when I use it and stay the same when I don't.

I have a good plant substrate, awesome lighting, but no CO2 system. I use Flourish and Excel and my plants are doing just fine.

Flourish supplies trace elements and other nutrients, flourish excel supplies carbon. Depending on your setup and plants excel can supply enough to where a co2 system is not needed. Both great products i use both in both my planted tanks.

Shutting off UGF's for any reason other than tearing the whole tank down or major cleaning is not advised at any time. Having said that, in order to use plant tabs with a UGF present, your gravel bed must be at least 3" thick to keep the fragments from getting into your water column as they naturally break apart. Since you're using a UGF, which the plant roots will be able to grow through and spread underneath, your plants should do well with liquid fert. dosing. Try using a liquid fertilizer like Flourish or Kent. You should also be using a trace element liquid and carbon substitute -- Flourish Trace and Flourish Excel are the best & easiest to dose.
