Not that i have seen, but my dogs are fairly active. i have the rawhides in their food bucket all the time (yes they are also free fed) and my vet says that they are in great shape, and with the pressed rawhides that they have here are one of their favorites. With those and the CET Hexides that my Vet has suggested, they have the best teeth that he has seen! Also i have raised/fostered many other dogs, and having the rawhides kept them busy, and kept them from chewing up my house!

My dog has been on rawhide since puppy. It was to help her to chew on it , not my shoes an etc. The vet said to keep her on rawhide her teeth are so white and clean. Yes, I guess there is some weight gain. But the choice of clean white teeth out weighs the weight gain. Hope this helps...

I believe it's like any treat. I've heard of digestive upsets occurring from too much rawhide ingestion in one period. As a rule, I give my dogs one such rawhide treat per day and also closely monitor what else they consume. Both my dogs frequently consume rawhide products, especially my one dog, and both are otherwise at healthy weights.

What is the best product for aggressive chewers?

Our Catahoula can finish a large rawhide bone (Petco) in a day. He needs something that will last!

Deer Antlers are the new "go to" chew for dogs who are aggressive chewers. They are expensive, but supposedly they last for months. I have a lot of friends who swear by them, you just have to make sure you get one that's big enough that they won't swallow it. I haven't tried it yet with my dog, he loves rawhide, and goes through those pizzle sticks in two seconds. Good luck!

Funny, I have a mixed breed that supposedly has Catahoula in him. He is also an aggressive chewer. The only thing that I have found that may slow him down a bit is to buy a super heavy weight rawhide bone. Other than that, nothing I give him lasts long....

I suggest the Pet Factory rawhide BRAIDS (item no. 75783). My dog goes through treats aggressively too and the BRAIDS last longer than most. A soup bone from your grocer is also a great chew choice and lasts forever.

Try the super heavyweight ROLLS, not the knotted bones. I ordered these by accident, and they are the only thing my lab/pit bull mix cannot decimate in the course of a few hours!!!

No. Even if not chewed thoroughly, product will break down in the stomach. Dogs have 4x the stomach acid as humans.

Thank you for your question. Dogs will swallow pieces of rawhide, and these will pass easily through the digestive tract. Although choking or intestinal obstruction with rawhide is very rare, it could potentially occur and common-sense prevention measures should be taken. A dog and a rawhide product should never be left together unsupervised. Some dogs may quickly chew and swallow large pieces of rawhide. When your dog has chewed on a piece of rawhide to the point of it becoming soft, take that rawhide chew away and substitute another. Allow the softened rawhide to dry and harden, and it can then be given back to the dog.

What type of chews for an older dog?

I have an older dog who used to love to chew on rawhide. Now they have become too hard for her teeth. I have soaked a couple in hot water and she can then chew them. Is there any type of rawhide or chews that are softer for dogs with sensitive teeth?

I've always given my dogs greenies, and have never had a problem (although I know a lot of people are not fans). They are smaller, so don't last like a rawhide bone, but they do come in a senior formula. Maybe that would be worth checking out? I had a thirteen year old German Shepard and she got a daily greenie right up until the end. They were her all time favorite treat. I did not give her senior greenies, she got the original recipe. She did not have sensitive teeth.
