No, Buff has skin allergy problems. Allergic to ragweed, palm pollen etc. I tried the vet food and it did not work. Went to Yorkie Spice club group, Nashville, Tn and one of the girls mentioned Solid Gold Holistique. It has worked along with everything else dermatologist suggested so I am afraid to change and just asked on here if they might ever carry it as I order medication for Buff through here plus canary food for canaries, and many other things offered which is a great help so I do not have to go to individual pets stores in town hunting all the time.

If anyone has a food specifically for liver issues, that would be Hill's prescription dog food, which comes in many varieties.....you can only get that by prescription from your vet, who you need to be working with closely on this issue anyway!!!!

this may too be late for your use, but maybe someone else can find it useful. We had a weimaraner that also had allergies. We didn't find out until she was about 9-12 months old. Until then it was chronic ear infections & hair falling out. We had comprehensive allergy testing done, and found out she was allergic to (among other things): house flies, mosquitoes, oak, and flour.

So what did that mean? getting Flea, Tick AND Mosquito repellent. Keeping her away from sticks in the park. Trying to not allow her to eat flies. And finally dog food with NO FLOUR. At the time, there was one option, I believe it was Nutro or something similar. Eventually we found Drs. Foster and Smith brand food, which has no flour. She ate Dr. Foster and Smith food for 10 out of her 15 years.

Get your dog allergy tested. find out exactly what the problem is. It's expensive, but not as much as monthly vet bills.

I have tried several dog foods with the same result. I have a golden retriever and I switched to Healthy Weight chicken & brown rice made by Blue Buffalo and HAVE NOT had to clean my dog's ears since. There are a lot of companies that put garbage in their foods, such as: chicken beaks, toenails, and guts. These are listed as chicken by products. I WOULD NOT feed these to ANY animal. You may have to pay a little more per bag BUT, AT LEAST you will not have to buy ear medicine to clean it's ears.

Thank you for your question. Choosing a food when worried about a food allergy can be difficult. Without know what the food allergy is it comes down to trial and error. Here is a list of food allergens in order of the most common offenders: beef, dairy products, chicken, wheat, chicken eggs, corn and soy.

Try Blue Buffalo Brand. AT LEAST get on the internet. There is a web site the ranks the quality of dog foods. Try and get a brand WITHOUT any chicken by products and is all natural. You might pay a little more per bag, BUT it is so well worth it!!!!

Just carefully read the labels.....they're usually one of the main things mentioned in the dog foods that are grain free.......talk to your vet as well. If he/she needs low fat, or senior, or puppy, etc special food, they should also have them in grain free but may be harder to find.

Best Drs Foster & Smith brand food for active Large Breed?

I have a 2.5 year old 87 lbs mix. I currently feed him Purina One for large breeds, and he does perfectly well with it. However, i can't ignore the nutritional value and price of your brands as compared to his current food, but I'm concerned about giving him a food that doesn't address the needs of a larger VERY active dog. It's not that he's hyper or anything but we live a very active lifestyle where he does a lot of running. Do you recommend one of your formulas over another in this situation?

Answer:

Remember, the higher the protein level in his food, the more "hyper" and active he'll be......if he's a basically indoor dog, that is walked a few times a day, you probably DON'T want a super high protein food.

Other than that, any of the quality dog foods for large breed dogs should be fine.....If he's very very active, yes, the high protein foods are great for him, but not so sure (personal opinion) about Purina: I'd tend to go with Nutro, with Royal Canin, with Blue Buffalo etc, which are the hightest quality dog foods as far as I'm aware.

Either the Doctors Foster and Smith Chicken and Brown Rice Adult Dog Food or the Doctors Foster and Smith Lamb and Brown Rice Adult Dog Food would be great choices for your active, large breed dog. Both formulas are balanced to meet the nutritional needs of large breed dogs per AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) guidelines. These diets contain high quality protein, fruits, and vegetables to provide the essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants needed to support overall health. These formulations do not contain any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

We recommend discussing any diet change with your veterinarian prior to making the switch. If you do switch diets, be sure to gradually introduce the new diet over 7-14 days. An abrupt change in diet often results in gastrointestinal upset in dogs. Once the transition has been completed, use the feeding guideline chart to determine the correct amount of food to feed to your pet. The amount fed can be adjusted based upon each animal’s unique needs (activity level, etc.).
