Getting a larger dog into a car

I work at a vets office and had a client ask if there was anything that can help with getting her 100 pound dog in and out of the car. We have an electroninc lift tabel and she was wondering if there was anything like that. She does not have anyone to help her get the dog in and out of the car. I suggested the ramps for in the car but she was unsure if that would work. Any ideas?

Answer:

We've had a few big dogs (60-190lbs) - throwing a treat in the car and having them "go get it" can motivate them to get in themselves. If they get to a point where they just can't do it (arthritis, etc.), you can have them put their front paws in, then give them a "boost" for the rest of the way.
Other than that, I'd go with some portable steps or a ramp. Sometimes a side door vs. the back hatch works easier for climbing in, too.
We were able to get away with treats and the occasional "boost" for ours. Haven't used a ramp... yet...

keeping a dog cool in a car when it is shut off

We are starting to travel with our dog and when we stop for lunch and need to leave her in the car I want to be sure she is safe. Is there any thing that will keep her cool when the temperatures are hot out side and inside the car?

My vet advised me never to bring my dogs along if there is a chance that I will have to leave my vehicle/dogs unattended. I know folks that have left their pet in their vehicle to run inside a drugstore for a gallon of milk and came out to find the police waiting for them. Seems a concerned shopper felt the pet should not have been left unattended and called them. You can be fined, have to go to court and in some cases your pet can be taken away from you. If I must bring my dogs along on an errand, I always bring my husband or a friend so they can stay in the car (engine and air on) with my dogs. No worries about temperture or concerned animal lovers calling the police. If I travel and my dogs cannot be with me on every leg of the trip, I have a wonderful kennel that takes great care of them till my return.

if the temp is above 70 leave the car running,don't leave her in the car, or don't take her. I have two dogs and if it is below 45 or over 70 they stay at home. If we are traveling a long ways or to an event that is dog friendly durning the warm months (or cold months# and the dogs are going we eat fast food in the car or eat at a picnic site with dogs on leashes #stick your leg though the dogs leash and put it up around your knee slightly under your thigh .. dog gets to look around but in his/her excitment can't bolt off as easily as around your ankle and your hands are free to eat etc).

Thank you for your question. You should never ever leave your dog in the car when it is hot outside. You should purchase a tie out and always keep your dog outside the vehicle in a shaded area when the car is not in motion.

Do you carry a Front Seat Pet Barrier?

It fits between the seats and has straps for over the headrests. Is a heavy mesh or solid black. Is about as tall as the headrest though so dog can"t get in the front seat.

check travel needs there is one that doesn't block your field of vision or the dogs, looks more mesh then 'metal' is black

harness the dogs down would be a good way to make them stay seated for theirs and your own saftey..would hate to have to explain to the cops that my dog jumping in the middle or into the front seat caused my wreck ;-)

Is there any type of containment for a small dog while boating?

I have three miniature long haired dacshunds. They enjoy being my 17.5 boat, but there is no good place for them to be secured while the boat is in motion. I know you are not supposed to tie them in anyway to the boat, but am looking for some sort of containment such as the "solvit car seat" you sell. I do practice safe boating, and they all wear life jackets while boating, if that is a concern to you.

Thank you for your question. I forwarded it on to our in-house veterinarians and this was their message in response:

Wearing their life jackets is the most important thing you can do. The life jackets should have a lead attached to them. You could provide a rubberized mat of some sort to provide an area where footing is improved. A good dog crate will also work. On another note, the dogs should have sunscreen applied to their noses, ears or other areas where the skin is exposed to direct sun light. No zinc in the sunscreen!
