My puppy does not want to sleep in her crate at night. What can I do to help her?

Puppys are used to being near the beating hearts of their mother and littermates, it seems a bit odd to us, but you can actually simulate this by getting an old style wind up clock (like the Baby Ben) wind it up and put it next to the crate, even have against the crate.(but never in the crate) the ticking will seem like a heart beet to the puppy, and may help to comfort him.

Will she enter the crate on her own during the day? Does she have something soft to sleep on and sleep with?

When we brought our puppy home, we took a towel to have the breeder rub on the momma dog, and let Shadow sleep with that, so that she had something familiar to sleep with. Oh and yes, I spoil her, so that first night, I slept on the floor next to the crate LOL

Please don't ever force a puppy into the crate, either. Perhaps you could investigate the Calming Collars that they sell here? I have one for my Siamese who is terrified of thunderstorms and it really helps her to stay calm.

Can you crate trian two puppies in one crate?

We are getting a boy and a girl at the same time and we plan to crate them together. Will we be able to house train them this way?

If there are two adults and you can each take them out together, it may work out, but of course there will be times when one lets you know it's time to go and the other one may care less.

Answer:

First make sure that they wouldn't like to have separate space. Perhaps two kennels facing or next to each other. This is usually a good solution and the dogs are usually fine with this. If not you can get one larger crate, (being as its not for Rottie training) but get the one with the separator in it. That way you can remove the separator if need be.

She is 6 years old and we just moved and she has almost ruined our back door trying to see us leave since she can't she gets her mouth full of water and goes to door and spits the water on our bamboo floor and scratches. We have tried medication to calm her, turned on radio and or tv while we are gone so far nothing. We even tried crating her and she almost destroyed it. Any suggestions? We have been at new house for 3.5 months no changes.

This is a difficult problem and I have seen it many times in my 25+ years of dog training. However, there is a new thing called the "Thunder Shirt" honestly, I thought it was a gimmick, just another scam, but while helping another trainer at her dog training kennel, she had a client buy them for the two dogs she was boarding there. These two dogs were constantly whining and barking and totally disrupting the entire kennel for the first 3 weeks they were there. After she bought the thunder shirts and put them on.( sort of as a last resort) both dogs were calm and quiet. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it for myself. Give it a try. If that dosnt work, call a reputable dog trainer/behavorist in your area.

Separation anxiety is a real condition in dogs. This person needs to seek the advice of a veterinarian that specializes in modifying this behavior. Prescription medication may be needed.
