What bed would be best for a dog who had a slipped disk and recent back surgery?

She still does not have full strength in her back legs and struggles to get up if she is in a plush bed.

No, I I have ordered one before, great for a new puppy, easy to wash, and soft, but not very supportive for older dogs. I would order one with more support.

The Drs. F&S Quilted Super Deluxe Dog Bed is great for this. I had a dog who lived years after spinal surgery and found great comfort in this bed. The solid inner foam gives the support to help get up and down and then there's a soft layer on top. It also is firm enough to keep the spine straight while laying down. Also you might search for a Pet Zone Lift n Aid Dog Mobility Harness. I know they can be bought on ebay. I don't know your dog's size, but I believe they are only made for larger dogs. It is great for helping lift your dog without causing pain to either of you. They can wear it as long as needed during recovery and is good for helping to steady the dog when relieving herself. Good luck with the recovery. My dog had many good years after her surgery.

Our older dog prefers a foam bed to one with cotton stuffing. The stuffing tends to slide around as she gets on and off the bed making it seem unstable. She does sink down into the foam beds but at least they don't shift under her weight. I would get one that is flat and low to the ground so she doesn't have to climb into it. Maybe the orthopedic bed?

I would say an orthopedic bed would be best for the support. The foam stays firm and doesn't thin out over time.

Have you looked at the orthopedic beds? One of my dogs has arthritis and I got her the Deluxe Orthopedic Pad. The material inside is like those foam pads people put over their mattresses. My dog really likes that bed. Hope that helps (:

We also have a chewer. The "Deluxe Self-Warming Bolster Dog Bed" (9N-36365, 36366, 36367) has lasted for years. I think the secret is no cording - no defined edge to gnaw on.

I also have a doberman. NOTHING is chew proof when its comes to beds. I had a kong bed I got to put in her kennel b/c she's would destroy and blankets I put in there, and I heard they were chew proof. I found out fast, that they are not. She was able to destroy it. Even though it was a KONG.

KONG makes a bed that is highly chew & nail digging resistant.

My 100# dog has destoyed & eaten numerous bedding attempts usually within a week & all of the toys on the market that I have tried so far, literally in minutes, including Tuffies (which lasted 20 minutes) except for her Kong Extreme or Nylabones.

However, it has taken her six months to tear up her Kong bed (Xmas gift 2010). She quickly decided soon after she got it that she didn't like chewing on the bed & chose to just dig at it. It lasted this long, primarily because it took until this week, before she finally realized that she had destroyed the zipper, which allowed her to access to the inner casing holding the polyfill, but given her past history, this is quite a success for a bedding product.

This is mico suede...so very chewie for the chewer. I am just slightly worried that my nester will rip it. So making a cover. DRs fostersmith have beds with a tougher material

After my Springer pup chewed through two beds I started buying twin bed comforters from the local thrift store (Habitat for Humanity). It didn't stop her from chewing it up, but at $5 a pop it wasn't breaking the bank. She eventually grew out of the habit of chewing on her bed and I could get a real bed for her then.

Kuranda dog beds are great for dogs that are chewers. The ones with metal frames are chew proof, they are often used in animal shelters because of their durability.

Beds for heavy boned breeds (Mastiffs)

Which types of beds are recommended for heavy bone breeds (ie, mastiff). I have a 4 year old bullmastiff, who weighs 130 lbs, and I need a bed that he won't sink into. At this rate my next purchase might have to be a twin mattress.

We have 3 Great Danes and we purchased the Quilted Super Deluxe Orthopedic Dog Bed. We have had tho for months and it does not even have a dent in it. We had to purchase 2 more because of the demand of this bed around our house. We have tried other Orthopedic Beds before and they started to sink in before the first week was over. My sister has had this bed for 3 years and with 2 Labs and a large Shepherd who all attempt to sleep on it together everyday, it has withstood the weight and looks great!

My Prince is a 130 lb Cane Corso , very muscular.He doesnt sink at all we were very impressed with the quality and Fluff of this bed.Overstuffed luxury sofa bed is a great investment for the comfort of your big boy.

I use the Sofsuede Bolster Couch for my Newfoundlands. They vie for who gets to sleep on it. The largest size is big enough for a Newf to lay flat out. The cover is removable and can be washed in a standard washing machine. The bolster can also be washed.
