I have never found any dust-free litter. I have tried many different types, even those claiming to be "dust-free". My recommendation is just to pour the litter very slowly and keep the box down low to the litter box when you pour.

Try the pine litter. It is small pellets and disintergrates into "sawdust" when wet. You scoop the feces and let the other fall through the grate. You need a box that sifts for this litter to work best.

You could try Yesterday's Mews. It is recycled, cleaned newspaper that is made into small pellets. You will have to change the box though.

Answer:

what vets usually recommend for this is one made from newspaper, such as "yesterday's news." it's made into hard pellets so they aren't going to eat it the way kittens sometimes eat the other types of litter.

I highly recommend Clump 'N Flush cat litter. It is all natural, hard-clumping corn cob litter. It is non-toxic, biodegradable, scoopable and flushable! It is very soft on paws and safe if kitties ingest it while grooming. I have used this through multiple cats and they have all taken to it immediately. Best litter I have ever used! Try Clump and Flush. It's all-natural, made from corn cobs and dust free. Since it's natural, I prefer it to use with cats or kittens that can ingest litter when cleaning.

I have always had declawed cats. We have 5 now all indoor. Have been using Everclean litter since 1983. Pricey but worth it. After they get declawed they sometimes have bandages. If not then you have to use that newspaper litter for a little while. But after they heal you don't need special littler. I have no problems with their toes and Everclean litter. I also use self cleaning electic cat boxes. Have 6 now. No smell no problems.

I LOVE Natures Miracle clumping paper litter (it's like sand). I have one declawed cat and it has never been a problem. It has no dust, great odor control, doesn't track and is enviro friendly. The only weak area is it clumps but not amazingly well - tolerably well in my opinion given the other benefits.

My cat (now 9yrs) was declawed at 5 mos. Did some research and found "Good Mews" litter (paper based in pellet form) was both flushable and rec for declawed cats. I used that as soon as he came home from the surgery and was never a problem. I was so glad to find litter I could use immediately, because I've had problems (with other cats) in the past which shied away from the shredded newpaper. In fact, I've used it ever since, he loved it, I loved it, though just changed to a clumpable litter. Male cat urine is potent enough; as they age, seems to get worse, thus my change to the clumpable litter, today, in fact. I hope that will mitigate urine stench problem.

No, any litter will do once the declawed paws have healed. Until then, use only shredded paper as litter. I have had many declawed cats and have never had any difficulty with any litter I chose once those paws have healed from the surgery. Beware of corn/wheat litter - if you have allergies to these substances, they may flare. My husband had a very bad reaction when we brought wheat litter into our house.

No, once a cat's paws have healed their is no problem with using regular litter. All my cats are declawed and we have used the litter pearls, pine pellets and clumping litter. They prefer the clumping litter to the other types. I suggest trying a couple of different types and let them choose their preference.

Hi Mnocera,

I have seven cats. All are declawed. No, they DO NOT need a special litter. I use any scoop litter that they like. The only time you have to worry about a special litter is right after the kitten/cat HAS been declawed and is coming come from the Vet for about 2 weeks. Then use something called Yesterdays Mews-it's recycled newspaper that has been cleaned and made to look like little pellets. Then change the box every 1-2 days. I hope this helps. We recently moved from NJ to TN and traveled for 2 days in a packed Prius with 2 cats. The trip was much better than expected. We kept each cat in his/her own cat carrier. I put a cushion and a tray with some litter in each carrier. A friend who works at an animal hospital gave me several small trays with high sides that were perfect for litter boxes. I think the most important item for us were the tranquilizers prescribed by our vet. Our cats are extremely vocal and the thought of 16 hours of meowing would have been unbearable. We stayed overnight at a La Quinta motel which worked out well. The cats were not interested in eating during the car ride but ate very well when we stopped at the motel.

I've traveled long distances with cats several times. The first, Boston to San Francisco, and then back, with five cats. Put up chicken wire between front and back seats and across windows, and had one litter box in back, with water available (1970 Valiant). Fed them when we stopped at night at roadside rest stops or at campgrounds. One stop was on a small island in the middle of a river somewhere, and I let them out to run free. They all came back for bedtime. This worked well for them and for me.

The next long distance trip with the same five cats was Bangor, ME, to Sacramento, CA, with furniture. This time, I rented a truck and towed the Valiant. The cats and furniture were in the truck; the cats in carriers (individually), with small litter boxes and with water dishes. I tried to keep the cats cool by putting ice blocks in the carriers, with the melt to go into the space below the cats' space. This didn't work: at the first stop, I found my poor cats in ice water up to their knees/elbows, and shivering. It was summer, and very hot, and the truck had no AC. That trip wasn't good, but we all survived.

The next two trips, I had movers to deal with the furniture, and rented 31- foot RV's to transport me, the plants, fish and 17 cats, while a friend drove my car. (You can't tow a car behind a rented RV.) For these trips, I had large carriers, and put small rectangular plastic tubs in each, with litter--about 6" deep by 12" by 8". Also had small, deep ceramic bowls in each carrier with water in one and crunchies in the other. I chose the combination of cats to share a carrier by my knowledge of their personalities and friendships--either two or three per carrier, depending on carrier size (I had chosen the carrier sizes knowing the cats, and who might travel well with whom). This worked well both trips. When we stopped, I let one carrier out at a time in the AM, while I cleaned their area and replaced food and water.

In choosing carrier mates, mostly I found it obvious. However, both trips, there were a few problem children. I finally decided just to put the three most aggressive cats in together, and let them sort it out. That was a good decision--after the first few hours, each adopted his own corner of the carrier, growled off other potential invaders, and was content.

For two cats, on a relatively short trip, I would suggest a carrier large enough for both, plus a small litter box, and stable bowls (deep, ceramic) for water and kibble. Be sure there's a soft mat for them to sleep, and room to walk around as they wish. A mat that they're used to, and/or familiar toys, will help. I do not advise free run of the car, despite one of the other responses above; no matter how happy or well behaved you and they may be, if they happen to wander under the pedals, and there's an automotive emergency requiring your quick response, there will be disaster--either to you or to them, or to both.

Moved my daughter's two cats from Michigan to Florida using a crate. The cats could move around if they wished but did not have the run of the vehicle. They could be covered with a sheet if they were upset but we never needed to do that. They had food, water and litter box all available in their space. The only complaints we heard were when we were in heavy traffic at the beginning of the trip and with the changes in altitude going through the mountains.

Hi. Okay, I am sure some folks will not agree or like my answer, but I have made two long distance moves within the last 3 years ~ CA to TX and TX to CO. I had 3 dogs, 4 cats and multiple fish to move. When we first set out from CA to TX, I used one of those barrier screen type devices that people use to keep their dogs in the back seat - my cats were loose and had run of the back seats and the far back storage area (Isuzu trooper SUV). I put down towels, some cat "cubes" they could hide in if they wanted and one of those drop in type little boxes (where they have to go through the hole on the top. We made it from Sacramento to Fresno (about 6 hours) of the most god awful howling you could imagine and them trying to break down the barrier! I finally gave in and removed the barrier and allowed them access to me and my daughter up front. All was quiet for the rest of the trip. In fact, that is all they wanted - to be comforted and near us on this scary journey!!! Maybe this won't work for you, but I have heard of others who have traveled this way with cats and they seem to be more relaxed when not "stuck" in a carrier. The trip from TX to CO was a nonstop 14 hour trip with the cats free again. Not a sound or potty accident in the car. BTW, one small dog was in w/ us but the other two traveled in husband's car. We also purchased a special travel water bowl that kept the water from sloshing out while we drove.

You also may want to try a couple "trial runs" with your cats just to get them used to traveling loose in the car. We had to do this because our homes were for sale in both states, so when a showing was scheduled, we just loaded everyone up and took off for a couple hours. A LOT of work, I know, but helped get them used to the drive! :)

When we move, I use traditional pet carriers (the durable hard plastic types with the metal cage-style doors) that you can purchase at any pet store or major retailer. I'd recommend limiting one cat per carrier, because I find they're less stressed that way. Regarding litter boxes: what I do is find small cardboard boxes (6''x6'' or 6''x8'' approx) that will fit thru the door and are cut at least 3-4'' deep. (Use packing or duct tape to seal all seams & edges.) When we stop to eat, I put the "travel litter boxes" in the cages with the cats, filled with scoop litter. When we come back from eating & stretching, I scoop the boxes (if they used them) and then pour the unused litter back into the original litter container - buy the jug or bucket type for the trip, so you can put the lid back on. (Also helpful, small trash can bags that are lightly scented to scoop in to.) During driving, I won't allow the litter boxes in with them - only during rest/eating stops - because I want to encourage them to lay down and wait for their next break. Its safer & less messy that way. If you plan to stay overnight at a hotel, bring along a standard size cat box too and allow them access to it over night. I found, with my cats, they preferred to not eat/drink/potty in the car but were more than happy to do all that overnight while we slept. This method has always worked for us.

[We're military and have moved soooo many times. Our 2 cats, 2 chinchillas, 2 frogs and MANY fish (yes, I travel with live fish!) are WELL TRAVELED. They've been driven from Louisiana to Alaska, thru Canada, then to Arkansas and finally to Arizona over the past 14 years. To date, only 1 fish has died, but he was old. Note: You might need Health Certificates and/or proof of vaccinations for your cats to cross states lines. Something to ask your vet about.]

1) Carrier: it really depends on your cats. Are they comfortable in the car? Do they settle down and will they just sleep the whole ride? Do they get manic, or yowl the whole way to the vets? Really, you just want to make sure that they have enough room to turn stand up & turn around, make sure you have a towel, tshirt, or some type of pad in there to be soft. And I'd personally recommend something easily hosed-down, in case they get carsick & vomit, or widdle or defecate in the carrier.
2) No, no litterboxes for cars. You CAN get the cheap shallow litterbox kits, or some type of shallow plastic container with a lid, and when you take a break, let the cats have access to it. But if your kids are like mine, they won't want to go as long as they're on the road.
I drove from St Louis to Long Island with frequent breaks, and my boys refused to eat, drink, or use the litterbox until we'd finally gotten to our bedroom. Take breaks, put them on a harness and let them walk around, give them access to a water bowl and litterbox, but don't be surprised if they refuse to use it.

I got 'inventive' kind of like the person who did the storage container. I used weather stripping, the kind you use on doors, and applied it so that there was a 'seal' between the top and bottom. Sounds strange, but for a couple bucks, my problem was solved. I did have to set something with a little weight on the top, as my cat tends to jump out of the litter box and bumps the lid, but it worked great...

At the pet store there is a litterbox that is basically like a large covered bucket, and the lid has a hole on top that the cat jumps into to get down into the litter. Since the litterbox opens from the top, that might work for you.

Usually when a cat urinates up high like that it's caused by one of two things:
1) The box needs to be cleaned. The cat is avoiding it's usual sqatting position because it doesn't want to get close to all the "nasties" in the litter; or
2) Too much litter in the box, but this is rarely the reason.

If they defecating there and that is why you want to keep them out, purchase chicken fencing or other wire fencing that has spaces big enough for plants to come through. Place it on the ground where needed, cover with mulch or dirt so that you don't see it...but not more than 1/2 inch. The cats will stop using that area because they can't scratch without hitting the fencing.
