what type of furniture is good for declawed cats

2 cats are both declawd on front,afraid to get wood products due to possible wood slivers.

There are plenty of cat trees that are completely carpeted, and you wouldn't have to worry about them developing a bad scratching habit that often goes along with carpeted cat trees because they are declawed.

Even though the cats are declawed, they still have the instinct to scratch. Cats have scent pads in their feet and the action of scratching leaves their scent on the item. They like texture so a well constructed post covered with rug or sisal would be nice. Get one with a broad, square base and place it near a wall so it will not tip over and discourage them from scratching. The shoulder and leg muscles in declawed cats sometimes atrophy because they are basically forced to walk on their knucles after their toes are amputated. Stretching is theraputic for them. I have adopted declawed cats in the past and they are also comfortable using low cat trees.

I have one declawed and one clawed cat. I have found that any of the Furniture here is good for my declawed cat except for the straight climbing towers. My declawed cat adores anything that has level to level that he can jump from since he can't climb. For 'clawing' action, he uses the cardboard scratchers by themselves (not down in the toy) so he has a edge to scrape his paws on. He enjoys the motormouse type things because it has plastic edges to catch his paws on, and he likes the sloped cardboard scratchers. I've never seen him use the kitty furniture as clawing posts.

My cat has scratched at and destroyed sections of the carpeting on the cat trees/condos. What can I do to keep the wood from being exposed.

Where it is a post, I know that I can put sissile rope on it, but on the lower part, I don't know how do deal with this problem in the best way. Thank you.

There are some cat trees that have little or no carpet, and your cats will enjoy the uncarpeted "tree" just as much or more than one with carpet.

Unfortunately, not much. Trim the ragged edges and wrap the exposed sections with duct tape. Nothing lasts forever with cats. I generally have to replace my trees every two years.

First of all, you need to teach your cat that this is a bad habit. Even if you get a cord protector, new cords are constantly brought into your house, and eventually you might overlook one. The moment you see her chewing on a cord, reprimand her. A firm tap on the nose or a squirt of water with a spray bottle works well. Unless you have a very disobedient cat, she will most likely learn to associate chewing on cords with a bad experience (getting wet, for example!) and will stop. If she doesn't, or if you'd like to get a cord protector just in case, Drs. Foster and Smith carries a Pet Cord Protector.

There is a product available called 'wire wrap' or something similar. It looks like a smaller version of a vacuum cleaner hose. It is black and is slit from end to end. It is used in the automotive industry to consolidate the wires in electrical harnesses. I have purchased it in 'Harbor Freight' stores and it is increasingly available in electronics stores like 'Micro Center. Cut it to size and insert your wire or wires into the seam. After that, it is not so much fun for cats to chew on anymore because they cannot easily get their mouths over it. If they persist, soak gauze in a product like Listerine, Bitter Apple or Phooey let it dry and wrap the hose with it. The only drawback to this remedy is that it doesn't match the decor in the room(s) but it will prevent a fried laptop (I remember it well) or a fried kitty.

I went to Lowes or Home Depot and purchased these plastic cord protectors or organizer tubes (they come in varying sizes and lengths) and I "wrap my cords in them, securing each end with electrical tape. Also, I used to rub Vicks Vaporub on the cords and the smell alone made my cat "run" away form the cords! Good luck!

What cat tree is best for a large heavy cat?

I have a 21/2 year old Ragdoll who weighs 15lbs and we expect to go as high as 20 lbs. He is also a very large cat over 23" long (not counting the tail). I want something stable and also tall

I purchased a floor-to-ceiling tower here at least eight years ago. I wanted something very sturdy for my four cats, two of whom were very large and all very active. I have been very, very pleased with the quality and construction of the tower, as well as the three other pieces of furniture that I have purchased here. It's the best and sturdiest I have ever found, and the price is reasonable for the good quality.

Our tower has held up well over the 8+ years it has been in use by active, bouncing, pouncing cats. Highly recommend!

I have 16 lb cats, one is long, one is tall. The long one loves to 'launch' himself from the cat furniture. I have found the furniture here to be fairly good and well made. I have one tower (all the way to the ceiling) and it is very stable, and has decent sized sitting platforms. I have the kitty club playhouse I think it is. The round pedestal at the bottom broke within a month or so from my enthusiastic cats. I got a longer bolt and glue and it's very solid now. I keep an eye on the other parts for tightness and getting loose and haven't had a problem yet, though they are a little looser than I'd like. Whatever you chose to buy, make sure it's a 4 posted sort of thing, like the clubhouse. Those are very stable. If you don't, then be prepared to put weights or sandbags on the bottom. I've had to do that with other cat furniture not purchased here. I thought they were stable, but not with my little fly-boy. Hope this helps! I know DF&S seem a little expensive, but believe me, I've shopped around quite a bit and they seem to be the best bang for the buck and they last forever. And they sell replacement parts/sections for their furniture.

Multiple cats and furniture

I have 9 cats, ranging from 10 years down to 9 months, all rescues, some are very active some not. What would be the best type of furniture to get for the guys??

I would suggest getting a cat tree that will give your active cats a chance to play, and also provide a place for your other cats to sleep the day away. Since you have a lot of cats, you would either want to get a large one (such as the Drs. Foster and Smith Deluxe Cat Trees), or you can get a few smaller (and cheaper) ones to accommodate all your cats.

I would look for a condo covered with fleece instead of rug. Even though cats cannot dig their claws into the fleece it is more durable and safer than rug. Cats like the texture and do scratch on the surface. Rug looks nice but shreds easily and you will be cutting off strings of rug backing and bits of fiber and fluff to prevent your cats from swallowing them. For stability, a broad, square base is desirable. The upright posts should be wrapped with sisal. Try to avoid cradles or any other components isolated on posts because they quickly become unstable.
I currently have five cats ranging in age from 6 years to 4 months and have had many, many more over the years. I have had both rug and fleece covered trees and posts. Even though I like the fleece better, my cats are currently shredding a rug covered tree which I have had for 18 months and expect to replace this year. Fleece lasts longer, is generally cheaper and requires less vigilance.
