My inside-outside cat keeps losing his breakaway collars. Should I get him a harness or leave him without a collar?

We live outside the city limits on a quiet country road. Most of our neighbors have animals without collars running free around the neighborhood. I'm just not sure if he needs a collar and if he does, should I try a harness? or would that not be safe in case he gets caught in a tree?

There is no sense on putting any kind of collar on a cat because of their physical makeup, and I have never understood the use of a break-away collar. The natural tapered shape of a cat's head will not allow the use of any kind of collar. Cats do not have the chin and jaw build to hold a collar on like a dog does. Break-away collars are just a decoration the owner likes. They do not sure any other kind of purpose. They are break-aways because thankfully the manufacturers know that collars on cats will get hung up and could cause harm or death to the cat and they don't want to be held liable. Unfortunately harnesses aren't much better. I have four indoor cats. I take them out on occasion. Two wear the come with me kitty harnesses that have a rubber stop that helps hold the harness in place and I have battery opperated red hearts attached that light up when the cats move. They help me see them when it starts to get dark. The other two I put in a covered, fenced in play area because these two are more skittish then the other two and one of them panicked enough that she pulled herself out of a harness that I never thought she would have been able to and the second one panicked just having the harness on. I have not tried the walking vests yet. If your cats are outside cats or inside/outside cats there is no sense on putting collars or harnesses on them, especially where you live. If your concern is for identification the best thing is to have the id chips inserted under the skin. My four were done at the local SPCA shelter for an extremely reasonable fee and are registered with the Home Again company. I do not recommend tatooing. If someone really wants your pet they will cut out or off the tattoo regardless of the tattoo's location.

I have 2 inside only cats and I had the same problem with the break away collars because they realized if they fiddled with them enough they would come right off. I opted to just get toy dog collars for them instead. Also because the little bell on most cat collars drives me up the wall, the tags bother me enough. I would suggest getting like one of those flexible kind of collars, that have beads on them. You can put a collar on them, and put a tag on them, and if they get stuck they can just pull there head right out of it. It would also eliminate the collar from coming off all the time.

Thank you for your question. We don't suggest ever leaving your pet without an ID tag. I had a cat that was constantly losing her breakway collar, but I felt it was worth it to make sure she always had a collar on. Yes, with an outside cat, it is always a possibility of getting stuck when wearing a harness. Although your neighbors don't collar their animals, I would say that your best option is to keep getting the breakaway collars.

I have the Come with Me Kitty Harness and bungee leash for my kitties. They were all a bit skeptical of it at first and would slink around low to the ground with it on. After keeping it on them in the house for awhile (supervised), they grew used to it. I love the bungee leash--I don't end up pulling my kitties when they jump up on something outside. I ordered the Large size and it fits all of my kitties nicely (9-16 pounds). Overall, a very good product that my kitties and I are pleased with!

I would suggest purchasing a corrugated cat scratcher. It eliminates the need for you to ever have to clip your nails because you cat does it on his or her own. This is how they would do it if they were wild. I know that you can get gloves to protect yourself and such. But why go through all the hassle of trying to clip your cats nails, and I am sure hes not fond of it either.

Please advise. I need low cost cat collars.

At one time, you offered, solid colored collars, for cats. Cheaper if bought in bulk. At least 6 + at a time. I will also need name tages to go with them. Thank you.
