what makes a bird fall from his breach at night while sleeping?

he is a blue front yellow wing amazone bird.we hear him fall at night two or more times.what could be the problem?wait for an answer.he fell about 5 times last night.5/18/11.he was born in 1982.

I realize this is late, but I my uncle had an eclectus that was diagnosed with lead poisoning by his vet. His eclectus would just fall straight to the bottom of the cage a few times each night. He never screamed about it or got upset. He would just climb straight back up to his perch. His eclectus lived for many years after the vet told him that his bird had lead poisoning.

Either way, that is a symptom that warrents a vet visit.

I hope that you've contacted an avian vet about your bird falling & have gotten an answer by now.
When birds sleep, half of their brain is still awake, partly so that they don't fall off of their perches while they're sleeping. I've had young cockatiels that fall off of their perches while they're asleep - causing the other tiels in the cage to go into "night fright". A night light helps them to get oriented with where they are in the cage & helps prevent injury. Again, I hope you've gotten an expert answer by now... and good luck!

I have read that it's the diet that is insufficient causing the falling. If you use a seed mostly diet you need to supplement with vitamins in the water. I have 14 birds and use a seed diet and supplement with vitamins. I have a cockatiel that's around twenty four years old so seed only diets do work but only if you supplement.

I use a kitchen dish brush, bought specifically for this purpose. I use warm water, and that seems to do the trick.

Answer:

I soak them in very hot water with a drop of dishsoap. Then rinse in hot water again. Dishsoap is generally safe, because I have seen it used to bathe birds in many instances. You can also use a very small amount of regular bleach in the hot water, but the hot water and dishsoap works best for me.

I would say untreated wood of any time could be bad cause of sickness could infect your bird so I wouldn't take any chances and just clean the wood maybe with soap,hot water and a good rinse before use and after use when needed :)
