I've been using miracle mud in the hang on Refugium for my 30 Gallon Reef tank for a couple of years now.
I believe it helps to reduce the nitrates in the tank, and benefits the corals and fish I have, providing trace elements.
A little(1 inch in sump or refugium) goes a long way.

I wouldn't think of starting any tank without using miracle mud in my refuge. I had a huge nitrate problem in my 75 Gal. Added some mud to the fuge: within 1 week my nitrates went from 80-100ppm. To virtually 0. Believe it or not, no Skimmer needed, this mud is awesome.

I bought the eco system 2 years ago for a 30 gallon reef tank and it has been anawesome purchase . When I started this tank I had no knowledge of how to keep a reef tank at all except for reading and online help . With this miracle mud all I do is change the water on my 30 gallon reef tank every two weeks and add some chemicals like iodine but that is pretty much it . I have soft corals and hard corals and they are all triving in this tank . The zoo's are growing like crazy in the tank and my xenias and mushrooms are doing great to . I also have 4 blue green chromis and 1 picaso clownfish , a very large royal gramma , one orange striped prawn goby that have been in this tank for over a year now and my nitrates are below 2.5 ppm on a red sea nitrate test kit .

Miracle mud has not been proven to be actually from the ocean - that said, I do believe incorporating it in a system with macro algae works quite well
