How to Care for a Drs. Foster & Smith Pet Bed

Many people wonder how they can keep their pet beds clean, yet make sure that they last as long as possible. Here's how to extend the life of a pet bed while making sure it's always clean and fresh smelling.

Beds:

• Spot clean whenever possible.
• Shake the bed out between washings to prevent clumping.

Covers and Liners:

• For best results, wash the cover using regular washing detergent.
• Always use cold or lukewarm water.
• Turn cover inside out to protect the no-stain finish.
• Always equalize the load in your washer, especially if the cover is large: sopping wet covers can become so heavy that they may unbalance your washer.
• Tumble dry on low heat, or line dry (recommended for darker colors).

Dogs tend to select couches, chairs, or beds as a place to rest or sleep. They prefer the comfort and warmth these items of furniture offer compared to a hard floor. Dog beds provide the same comfort benefits and they keep pets off furniture - an important consideration for many pet owners who prefer to keep their furniture free from pet hair. A bed introduced at an early age, reinforced with consistent training, will keep your pet off your furniture for his or her entire life.

Where you place your dog's bed is entirely up to you and your dog. Just remember it is his or her resting-place so it's best not to place it in a high traffic area of your home. Many pet owners place their pet's bed in their cage or crate once he or she is house trained, while others prefer a location near where they spend much of their time so their companion is always nearby. While any dog will enjoy the comfort of orthopedic or "dome-style" beds, orthopedic beds are especially recommended for dogs that are older, larger, have arthritis, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, calluses, or any bone or joint problem. Dogs can get "bed sores" (called decubital ulcers) too, so dogs who are recovering from an illness or surgery would also benefit from an orthopedic bed. There are various styles of orthopedic beds on the market. Look at the features before you buy. A good bed will have:

• A washable cover with a heavy-duty zipper. A layer of medical-grade orthopedic foam (looks like an egg carton).
• A firmness which will make it easier for the pet to stand up after laying down.
• Premium beds will have a solid foam.

Remember to place the bed away from drafts and colder areas, which may make your pet uncomfortable.

I just received the Quilted Super Deluxe Bed today and all I can say is I wish I'd have spent the money and gotten this bed about 3 dog beds ago! This is not hyperbole, "Super Deluxe" is just the way to describe our dog bed. With a large Labrador and a Mastiff cross, I purchased the 36"x54" for them to share. Since they often sleep snuggled together, the size and shape is ideal. The quilting and piping show its quality and give it the appearance of fine furniture. The dark paisley is beautiful and fits our decor. The bed has been tested for over six months and the cover washes well. Its placement behind our pair of recliners proves its odor resistance (and solves the problem of what to do with that space needed by the chairs). The dogs enjoy being close to us while we're relaxing and visa versa. This bed is worth every penny! The most comfortable spot in the house and who deserves it more?

I have 2 Great Danes and 4 of these Quilted Super Deluxe Beds. They each have one in the bedroom and another in the living room. I tried other dog beds but they don't last. My dogs are too big and too heavy for the regular stuffing. Other beds start off soft but end up matting down to 1/4 inch after they have layed on them for a while... they looked like beach towels! The quality of the covers is a huge plus seeing how I have two of them in my living room (36 x 54) and the covers wash up great. I've had mine for 2 years and there is very little fading and they still look great. These beds really are worth the money if your looking for something thats going to last, especially with the larger breeds!

We bought the largest rectangle bed available and it was well worth the money!!! It is amazing. The quality is far superior to anything that the chain stores carry and the cover is thick and has had multiple washings without any fading, or tearing. We have a 70 lb Lab mix and she can sprawl out with no problem. The pad is more like a mattress than a dog bed and she loves sleeping on her bed now.

We ordered the largest rectangle bed for our 110 lb Black Lab mix with arthritis. It looks so much more like a mattress with the quilted top (like a crib mattress), and surprised that there is not more foam inside v. egg crate - it is stiff. But that may be what our boy needs. He sleeps on it 50% of the time. But I feel better he has such a solid bed - he won't be able to smoosh this one flat!

You get what you pay for. Even though this bed is expensive, it is much better than the other three beds we have bought for our dog. We have a rescued German Shepherd. She needs the kind of support this bed offers. We got the 36X54 and it is plenty big enough for our 80 lb dog. We could have gone smaller, but she has the option to really sprawl out if she wants. I expect this bed to last the rest of our dog's life.

We got this for our 9 year old Lab/Pit Bull mix when he started having trouble getting up from the hard tile floor. We got this bed for him and just like that he was springing up again from lying down like when he was a pup. I purchased the rectangular 28 x 48 bed for my arthritic 70 pound Golden Retriever cross. The instructions said to let the bed "rise" for 24 hours as it arrives compacted. I put the bed aside in the living room planning to put it into the bedroom after rising. I heard a funny noise and much to my surprise, my dog was already laying on the bed- he loves it! My 2 comments are 1) I think I could have done with 1 size smaller even though he measured out to the size I purchased and 2) it would be nice if this were offered with a sheepskin cover. the fabric cover makes noise when he moves around at night. I solved the problem by covering it with one of his blankets. Great bed- I highly recommend it for anyone who has a dog that needs a strong orthopedic bed.

I ordered two of these beds, the 28" x 48" and the 36" x 52", for my Lab and Lab mix. I have gone through so many dog beds over the years (expensive ones, too!) that start to flatten and sag in the middle soon after the dogs start sleeping on them. These are thick, supportive, and retain their shape. Both dogs love them. I could sleep on them myself! I also wanted something that would be much more supportive for their joints in their senior years. I am very pleased with the quality of these beds. They are well worth the money. The Meadow print is lovely as well.

We purchased the 36"x54" bed for our two great Danes. They both love the bed and sleep on it regularly. We have had it for about 8 months and it has not lost its shape, even though it is subjected to being used as a springboard by our 11 month great Dane puppy. My 10 year old great Dane, who has some arthritis in her hips, loves stretching out and sleeping for hours on it! It's not just for the big girls, though, our Beagle and Mini Daschund also love sleeping right in the middle of it and manage to take up the whole thing!! A great bed!!

Yes, this bed is expensive when compared to other beds, but it is more than worth the money. We bought the bed for our 160 lb Dane and he loves it. I cannot get our Lab or our Dane off of the bed. We've had it for 4 months and it is just as thick as it was the day we received it. It's showing no signs of breaking down.

I purchased this bed for my 13 year old Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix named Casper. He LOVES it. I have purchased many beds from Drs. Foster and Smith, and currently, my dog has four throughout the house. This particular bed is very well made (thickness and quality) unlike the other orthopedic beds sold by other companies. It's interesting that the bed was compressed for shipping, and once taken out of the vacuum sealed package, the bed slowly expands to its normal size. The bed is very thick and so comfortable. I highly recommend it.

I have a 230 lbs. 6 year old male English Mastiff with arthritis and hip dysplasia and this bed has been a godsend! This bed is worth every last penny. After years and countless dollars down the drain on "orthopedic" beds for dogs that never hold up to his massive weight and flatten nearly 4-5 months after purchase, this bed has been amazing! In desperation, I even tried a human medical supply store for high density orthopedic mattress for a hospital bed and that too couldn't withstand his weight. The quilted cover washes beautifully and keeps the orthopedic foam clean and virtually odorless.

I ordered the first bed, and a round bed was sent instead of the rectangular one. The company immediately sent the information to return the bed and two days later I received the bed I had origianlly ordered. I ended up keeping both beds, one for upstairs and one for downstairs, because our grey loved them so much. They give him the support he needs because of his injuries. My Husky, weighing in at over 100 lbs, LOVES this bed! He hopped on it as soon as I pulled it out, as is the case with most of the dogs who've received this bed. He's beginning to show signs of stiffness and possibly arthritis and since we have hard wood floors throughout the entire house, I decided to invest in a bed that would support his achy joints. We've been looking for a good bed for our dogs and finally we have found it! We just received the Rectangle, 35" x 50", 9N-35778. It looks like a small mattress on the website which is what we wanted. It wasn't quite a mattress but it comes very close!!! I was concerned when it arrived in a box I thought too small for the "mattress". It was vacuum packed and expanded nicely.

Things we like most are 1) it is in fact like a mattress 2) the dark color (natural clove) won't show any stains 3) finally a material our dogs won't ruin by digging into a comfy spot (unlike sheepskin) 4) more than larger enough for a 100lb Rottie and 5) the sale price of $133.99; originally $200 - awesome. We will be ordering a second at this price!

Just a suggestion or tip... We suggest making and selling a "waterproof" cover for the foam core. Our one dog tends to "leak" severely at times and we want to make sure the core is kept clean. The shell can be washed at any time. So what we did was take the plastic it came it and wrap the core to make it "waterproof". The bed sounds a little funny but the dogs don't care and it protects the investment! Thanks for finally offering a great product at a great price!
