Recombitek rFLU provides protection against disease caused by the Equine influenza A2 virus. Equine influenza is a virus infection that is spread through the air by respiratory secretions and can also be transferred by contaminated objects and people moving between infected and uninfected horses. While almost 100% of horses that are exposed to the virus become infected, almost one in five will not show any clinical signs - but will continue to shed the virus. Use of the Recombitek rFLU equine vaccine can significantly reduce shedding of the virus.

Recombitek rFLU utilizes recombinant canary pox viruses as a vector to target only the parts of the virus needed for an immune response while protecting against other diseases. The recombinant technology used in Recombitek vaccines stimulates both arms of the horse's immune system (circulating antibodies and cell-mediated immunity) and uses only the proteins needed by the horse to stimulate immunity. According to the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), a recombinant canary pox vaccine is expressed in a vaccine strain canary pox vector which does not replicate in the horse. Recombitek contains modified live/recombinant equine influenza virus and live canary pox vector. Recombitek rFLU may be used in healthy horses as young as 4 months of age.

This regulation helps ensure vaccine quality and consistency in labeling. Administration and Dosage: Reconstitute the lyophilized vaccine with accompanying liquid diluent and aseptically inject a 2 ml dose by intramuscular route. For primary vaccination, revaccinate with a second 2 ml dose of this product 5 weeks later. Annual revaccination with a single dose is recommended.

A coughing horse may spread infected droplets as far as 50 yards and a single horse infected with influenza can infect up to 10 others. Almost all unvaccinated horses that are exposed to equine influenza become infected and unprotected foals may develop a fatal viral pneumonia.
