Deep in the Amazon rainforest, along the Manu river, there stands clay cliffs well known for their spectacular and ever-changing colors. Why are they so colorful? Because all species of tropical birds alight on these cliffs at one time or another to consume the minerals deposited in the clay on these cliffs. In point of fact, these minerals are essential for these species' diets. Nine minerals have been identified from these deposits: Calcium, Iron, Copper, Manganese, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Potassium, and Sodium.
Calcium: Needed for strong bones, proper muscle function, and eggshell production. Iron: Carries oxygen in the blood and needed by hens for egg production. Manganese: Required for metabolism of fats and sugars; improves hatchability. Potassium: Needed for normal heart and muscle activity. Zinc: Needed for sexual maturity in males; involved in formation of feathers. Copper: Helps keep blood vessels flexible for good circulation and promotes healing. Magnesium: Activates enzymes for absorption and transportation of nutrients. Phosphorus: Releases energy from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Min.
