What should I discuss with my veterinarian while considering Regu-Mate for my horse?
Talk to your veterinarian about what type of outcome is expected. Have your veterinarian explain the other treatment options that may be available to treat your horse's condition.
Tell your veterinarian if your horse previously or currently has inflammation of the uterus (endometritis), or if your horse could be pregnant.
Notify your veterinarian of any other medications or supplements your horse is taking. Also if your horse has had any reactions to previous medications.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
What is the most important information I should know?
People should not handle Regu-Mate if they could be pregnant, have clotting disorders, liver disease, or a history of stroke, breast cancer, and certain other cancers. Avoid any skin contact with the solution. Use protective rubber gloves and wash hands well after handling Regu-Mate.
Who should not take it?
Not for use in horses hypersensitive (allergic) to altrenogest. Do not use in mares with a previous or current uterine infection or endometritis, or in male horses.
Consult with your veterinarian regarding the physical examinations and laboratory testing necessary prior to and during treatment with Regu-Mate.
Dispose of any unused product, empty containers or partially consumed feed according to local and national requirements.
Human Precautions: Skin contact must be avoided. Use impervious protective gloves when handling Regu-Mate. The following people should not handle Regu-Mate:
- Women who are or may be pregnant
- Persons with known or suspected breast cancer or a history of breast cancer
- Persons with known or suspected estrogen-dependent cancer (some uterine cancers)
- Persons with cerebrovascular disease (stroke) or coronary artery disease (hardening of the arteries)
- Persons with thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders (blood clots) or a history of these diseases
- Women with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- Persons with tumors that developed while they were using oral ontraceptives or other estrogen containing products
- Persons with liver disease
Women of childbearing age should handle this product with extreme caution.
Human Exposure: Regu-Mate can be absorbed through the skin. Wear nonporous gloves and personal protective clothing when handling, measuring and administering Regu-Mate. The absorption of Regu-Mate can be increased if the medication is trapped between occlusive materials (e.g., latex gloves) and the skin.
Avoid contamination of other objects (e.g., pens, countertops, etc.) with Regu-Mate. If contaminated, wash well with soap and water.
If skin is exposed, wash with soap and water. Regu-Mate is oily and requires considerable washing and rinsing to remove the drug. Wash hands after use.
If eyes are exposed, flush with water for 15 minutes and get medical attention. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting, but contact a physician or poison control center.
What side effects may be seen when taking Regu-Mate?
Rarely see side effects at labeled dosages. Slight changes in blood levels of calcium, potassium, or liver enzymes may be seen. Consult your veterinarian if you notice any possible side effects.
If your horse experiences an allergic reaction to the medication, signs may include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If you observe any of these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.
How is it stored?
Store in a tight, light resistant, childproof container at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Once opened, use the 150 ml bottle within 14 days, and the 250, 300 and 1000 ml bottles by 28 days.
What should I do if I know of or suspect there has been an overdose?
Contact your veterinarian.
What should I avoid when giving my pet Regu-Mate?
Notify your veterinarian of any other medications, including vitamins and supplements, your horse is taking while receiving Regu-Mate.
Consult your veterinarian before using Regu-Mate with rifampin, since interactions may occur.
