"No hoof, no horse," is a popular saying that has a basis in reality. Healthy hooves are among the most important things you can give your horse.
The hoof's outer layer, called the periople, is composed of keratin, not unlike our nails. Like our nails, this layer is constantly growing, and as it grows, if cared for properly, it can become healthier.
Many factors are responsible for your horse's hoof condition, including environment, previous hoof disease, and poor nutrition. Topical protection may also be another factor contributing to your horse's hoof health. Proper hoof care is essential including daily cleaning and proper trimming and proper shoeing. Topical products made for the hoof are also a helpful tool in your hoof health repertoire.
Hoof topicals run the gamut from disinfectants to antibacterials to moisturizers to barriers from the elements. What your horse needs will depend on where he spends most of his time, whether he is in muddy soil, dry sand, or rough terrain. Current health is also a factor, whether the hooves are dry and brittle, crumbly, or if they just need some fortification.
