Overview
The PetSafe Wireless Fence is a wireless containment system, providing an easy-to-install alternative to traditional outdoor fencing or buried wire fencing. Using radio frequency, the PetSafe Wireless Fence creates a circular "safe zone" (up to 90 feet radius). It allows your dog to run freely inside the perimeter of the safe zone, but guards against him straying.
When your dog moves towards the boundary of the signal area, the collar delivers an audible warning. If he continues, he receives a low-level electrical stimulation from the collar receiver. As soon as he retreats back into the "safe zone," the stimulation ceases. With consistent training and practice, he begins to understand and learns to stay within the boundaries of his "wireless fence." [Back to top]

Pre-correction warning tone - Your dog receives an audible warning tone when he approaches the safe zone boundary. If he does not retreat, he receives continuous stimulation until he re-enters the safe zone.
Over-correction prevention (automatic shut off) - If your dog completely leaves the boundary of the safe zone, the duration of the electrical stimulation is limited to 30 seconds. After 30 seconds the system automatically shuts off for five minutes before resuming stimulation for another 30 seconds. This pattern of 30 seconds on, 5 minutes off repeats until the dog returns to the safe zone.
Installation
The basic installation steps are outlined below. Detailed instructions for installing and configuring your containment system are provided in the owner's manual.
Place the transmitter in an indoor area near a standard electrical outlet. (May be mounted on a wall.)
Plug the transmitter into a standard household outlet.
Activate the collar receiver.
Adjust the radius of the "safe zone" on the transmitter.
Walk the perimeter of the safe zone with the collar in your hand to determine the actually boundary.
Place the warning flags at the boundary of the safe zone.
IMPORTANT! Thorough training is required to successfully use this product. Spend the time required to totally familiarize your dog with the fencing system.
There are four basic steps involved in training your dog for a wireless fence. Each step should take approximately 3-5 days. Plan to work with your dog for 10-15 minutes, 3 times a day. Consistency and repetition is critical for success.
Teach your dog to be aware of and avoid the flags.
Train your dog to associate the correction (electrical stimulation) with getting too close to the flags.
Use temptations to convince your dog (on-leash) that the fence always matters.
Use more temptations to convince your dog (off-leash) that the fence always matters.
Twelve hours is the maximum number of hours per day that your dog should wear the collar.
Your dog needs to be supervised when he is in the fenced yard. Underground fencing is helpful in containing your pet, but it cannot prevent the entry of other animals or people into the safe area.
Collar receiver prongs can be positioned at different locations on your dog's neck to prevent irritation to the same spot.
Not intended for use on dogs under 6 months of age.
Remove metal collars or collars with metal tags when the PetSafe receiver collar is being worn. It is important, however, that dogs wear identification when outside so we recommend the use of plastic tags.
If you work your dog on a leash, attach it to a collar other than the PetSafe collar.
Warranty Information
Return of your PetSafe Wireless Fence to Drs. Foster & Smith for exchange or refund is limited to 60 days from the date of purchase. Beyond 60 days, this product is covered by the manufacturers' warranty and should be returned to PetSafe.
Is the PetSafe Instant Wireless Fence difficult to set up?
A.
Setting up the fence can be done within minutes. Simply set the perimeter where desired, set up the boundary flags, and you are ready to start training. The PetSafe Instant Wireless Fence comes with a training video to help you get started.
Your pet should wear the collar for the first 3-5 days without the receiver being activated. This way the dog does not learn that the collar causes the correction, but rather that getting closer to the yard boundary causes the correction.
Training time depends on your pet and on consistency in training. It's important to follow the training guides that are included with your fence. The more time you take, and the more consistent you are, the better the results will be when training is complete.
Where do I install the transmitter for the PetSafe Instant Fence system?

We recommend that you install your PetSafe Instant Fence on the first floor of your home, in close proximity to a grounded, non-switched, 110-volt AC outlet. If your yard has hilly terrain, we recommend that you mount it about 6'-8' off the floor. For flat terrain, install 2'-4' off the floor. The area should be clean, dry, protected, and non-metallic. The transmitter should be at least 3' away from heavy wiring and main water and power lines. It should not be placed within 3' of metal appliances such as water heaters, or laundry appliances. A slope in your yard may affect the circular radio pattern: mount the transmitter accordingly.
Are there any special instructions for installing the batteries into the receiver?
A.
Yes, you need to be within 10 feet of the transmitter when you install the batteries. They need to be installed with the positive side up on both batteries.
Does the correction get stronger as the pet gets closer to the boundary?
A.
This system contains a warning tone, which will sound before the correction is given. The strength of the correction stays at the same level, and does not increase in strength.
Battery life depends on how many times your pet passes through the boundaries, and the correction is activated. Batteries should be checked every 30 days to make sure they are working properly.
I have a shorthaired dog now, but we are planning to get a longhaired dog the next time. Will I be able to use the same collar on the new dog?

Yes, the collars come with two sets of interchangeable probes, one for longhaired dogs, and one for shorthaired dogs. Just put the extra probes in a safe place, where you'll be able to retrieve them from when you need them.
The manufacturer states that the receiver in the PetSafe Instant Fence system is waterproof; your pet can wear it in the rain, but not swimming. The transmitter should be kept out of the elements, preferably in your home or garage.
What type of batteries does the PetSafe Instant Fence use?

The receiver (collar) for the PetSafe Instant Fence uses two, 6-volt, lithium batteries. The collar comes with batteries, and replacement batteries are available at most hardware or department stores.
The correction felt by your pet is more like static electricity, rather than an electric shock. While the correction is unpleasant to your pet, it will not harm him. The PetSafe Instant Wireless Fence is a safe and humane way to train your dog.
