Cancer in Horses: Feeding for the Cure
Did you know that horses can develop skin cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma? But there is hope for our equine friends . . .
Common Infectious Diseases
Infectious diseases are those diseases that horses can get from each other, or via a vector, such as a mosquito, which may transmit the disease from horse to horse. Horse owners can vaccinate their horses against many of these diseases.
Diseases in Horses: Glossary
When you are reading through information pertaining to horses, it helps to know the jargon so you will understand what is being said. The following list of terms, while in no way comprehensive, will clue you in on the lingo of horse disease.
Equine Encephalomyelitis, About
Equine Encephalomyelitis is a disease that affects the nervous system. This disease is caused by at least three different types of equine encephalomyelitis viruses (Eastern, Western, and Venezuelan), which are carried by mosquitoes.
Equine Influenza, About
Equine influenza is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease. Equine influenza is caused by a virus similar to although not the same as, the type of virus that causes human flu. There are two subtypes of the influenza A virus that affect horses.
Tetanus (Lockjaw): Why Vaccinate?
Tetanus can be fatal to horses, but a yearly vaccine can prevent it, and the vaccine is a good idea because small cuts can go unnoticed and become infected.
