    COMPARE:
    TYPE ADMINISTRATION EASE OF USE

    Gummie Chew
The medication is mixed in a chewable treat base and flavored to the pet's preference. Pets will have a hard time telling medicine time from treat time, especially when you choose to flavor his chewable tablet with great tasting beef, apple, liver, or any other of our dozens of choices.
    Flavoring available!

    Capsule
The powdered drug is enclosed in a non-flavored, hard gelatinous shell. Dosages are customized for a pet's specific needs. Easy to swallow and masks bitter tastes. Some pet owners also request flavoring so that they can pull the capsule apart and sprinkle the contents on their pet's food. We can also combine several medications so the pet only has to take one capsule.
    Flavoring available!

    Animelts®
The medication is incorporated into a flavored base to form a rapidly-dissolving mini-tab. Dissolves so quickly it is difficult for the pet to reject it. Heat-sensitive medications can be given like a treat.
    Flavoring available!

    Medi-BitesTM
Medication is combined with all-natural ingredients to make a crunchy biscuit-like treat that your pet or horse will enjoy. Very palatable molasses-flavored form in which the amount of medication is not limited.
    Flavoring available!

    PEG Troche
The medication is included in a semi-soft preparation less chewy than a Gummie chew. Available in multiple sizes in a solid form accepted by cats.

    Oral Powder
Powdered formulations dissolve easily in water and pour on feed or use dry as a top dressing for feed. Uniform mix to each patient's specific needs. Horse will get proper dose. Can be flavored to enhance palatability. One or more medications can be combined.
    Flavoring available!

    Oral Paste
Medication is combined with a flavored oral paste in an oral syringe you can place in your horse's mouth. Oral paste is flavored for your horse's palate. Easy to give. One or more medications can be combined, when appropriate.
    Flavoring available!

    Liquid
Given via oral syringe or added to pet food for ingestion. This versatile method lets owners squirt a great tasting liquid into the mouth, or add to a favorite food.
    Flavoring available!

    Concentrate
Given by dropper onto the pet's tongue for ingestion. Medications can be given in smaller volumes than traditional drug forms.
    Flavoring available!

    Reconstitutable Suspension
The drug is mixed with a unique powdered base. The pre-measured flavored liquid for reconstitution is included along with instructions for mixing and storage. The separate powder and liquid are stable for 6 months - ideal for suspensions that have a short shelf life once mixed. Can be flavored "from the ground up" versus masking a preexisting flavor.
    Flavoring available!

    Emulsion
The drug is mixed in both the aqueous or oil phase and remains evenly dispersed throughout the preparation. Bitter medications can be made more palatable. The absorption of some drugs (e.g., griseofulvin) can be increased when incorporated into an oil phase.
    Flavoring available!

    Ointments
Rubbed into the affected area of the animal's skin. Targets affected areas and is easy to administer.

    Otics
The drug is mixed with an aqueous or oil base. Medications are administered directly to the ear, often increasing effectiveness and decreasing cost and potential for toxicity.

    Transdermal Gels
The medication is mixed with a topical gel that promotes absorption of the drug through the skin. A pre-measured amount of gel is applied to a part of the pet's body with little hair, such as the inner surface of the ear, or on the abdomen. The medication is absorbed through the skin, allowing the pet to be given medication without the fuss of oral dosing.

(Note: Care must be taken with this dosage form to protect the pet owner from possible self-contamination. Rubber gloves or finger cots should be used while applying this type of medication and hands should always be thoroughly washed after application.)

    Ophthalmics
The drug is mixed with an aqueous or oil base using USP guidelines for sterile product preparation. Sterile medications are administered directly to the eye, increasing efficacy and lowering cost and potential for toxicity.

Please note: not all forms are available for all medications. Here's why.

Drs. Foster & Smith Pharmacy will only compound prescription medications on a per order basis in forms that are safe and effective for companion pets. Drs. Foster & Smith is not a manufacturer of prescription medications.
