Mice have cohabitated with humans for 10,000 years and have been bred in China for centuries. It was in the Victorian era when the breeding of fancy mice gained popularity and this trend caught on in the United States around the turn of the last century.

Interesting Facts:
Characteristics: The average weight for female mice is between 30 to 60 grams and 38 to 60 grams in males. Life expectancy of mice range from 12 to 36 months but they are prolific breeders with an average litter size of 9 to 12 babies that wean as soon as 18 to 28 days.
Appearance: These domesticated animals have gone through selective breeding and come in a wide variety of exotic colors including Fawn, Beige, Coffee, Silver, and Siamese. Coat variations include Satin (shiny), Longhair, Curly, and even Hairless.
#1 Preventable Health Problem: Overgrown incisors are a common problem with mice. Provide hard gnawing materials such as Chew Toys to help wear teeth down.
Preferences: Mice require physical activity so it is important to include ramps, wheels, climbing platforms, and ladders. The Silent Spinner or Chewbular Play Tube are also fun and encourage activity.
Best Features: Pet mice are playful, social, and intelligent animals that make excellent pets for older children and adults, and offer great companionship.
Housing: Wire cages are the best because they offer good ventilation and satisfy the need for mice to climb. Allow 12 x 14 inches of floor space for 4 to 5 mice.
Diet: Commercially available complete diets or balanced pellets ensure proper nutrition for mice. To vary their diet, supplement with small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables. Seed mixes can be a small part of their diet. Always provide clean fresh water daily.
